Republicans cheering for a federalized police force that is openly advertised as just an example to do this in other cities and extended past the time period it was designed to last is another break away from the cultural norms we've been living under.
In fairness, there is a tangible difference in "why" that both groups here would be pushing for. A Republican is looking at DC is absolutely seeing a mayor who isn't doing their job and won't be cowed into doing their job. Thanks to this being DC, the next person in chain of command would, quite frankly, be POTUS or POTUS adjacent just due to DC's state of legal existence as not-in-any-state. If Biden or Kamala does it, well this doesn't square with their policy positions, Democrats traditionally support soft on crime policing, so clearly the action wouldn't be done for its own sake, which makes their motives much more able to be scrutinized. This ain't Trump dick sucking either, Republicans in general have owned being hard on crime for a long time.
... what exactly do you think he is trying to make an example of and to who?
A Democrat mayor he has direct control over enacting soft on crime policing and the city they are ruining, and to the United States to prove soft-on-crime means criminal enabling in practice.
Every 4-5 years there seems to be a sudden outburst and a bunch of copycats.
TBH, I wonder if this is a case of media framing writ large. US is big, we have guns and terrible schools, any time the media wants a story, they can flip through the files and find an attempted on whenever they want.
All this stuff is just so easy. Like how hard would it be for him to let fire victims rebuild and not get shit on?
With California, you have a citadel of red tape, so it may very well be that it is not in fact easy.
Of course, Newsom is also the one responsible/in control of most of that red tape too. So I'm not defending him per se, but more questioning to what degree Newsom is acting vs. Newsom is part of the swamp in California and exists in a state of tied-hands.
I will bite: What groundwork?
My wild guess... Trump trying to force-manage cities as a reaction to the litany of shitty mayors who quite frankly aren't doing their damn jobs and letting cities go to shit. The path of frog-boiling would be to declare an emergency in L.A., then go after DC since he has nothing really stopping him, and then NYC (If I'm correct about the Olympics.) under the auspices of something diplomatic given the Olympics is an excuse for nations to engage in dick measuring and there's no reason not to show off Uncle Sam's.
