I think people should take pride in who they are and their actions. I just don't understand this patriotism concept. I mean you shouldn't feel ashamed but why take pride in where you were born? That's not an achievement. I think George Carlin talked about this.

As for explanation of patriotism, I see it as so:

1. By his birth/upbringing, circumstance bestows unto a man a nation he calls home. With this, the man inherits the project of the nation: its way of life and government.
2. Such a man may choose to take on responsibility for the project. In doing so, he becomes a patriot.
3. Patriotism then is the sense of duty instilled in him as a patriot. To maintain the project. To protect it from within and without. To see it persevere.

Putting it simply: A patriot takes on responsibility for the national project. Patriotism is what compels him to this duty.

As to why someone would become a patriot. Personally, I would say love. A patriot is a romantic at heart. Though they may be, and should be, pragmatic and tactical in conducting their duty, the compulsion that drives them to duty comes a deep infatuation.

Regarding the prides one may feel in creed and birth. It is true that these are not achievements, but that isn't the point. This pride comes from the cohesion one feels as an individual integrated into the many of the collective - very similarly in character and patterns of behavior as one sees in families. The group feeling becomes your feeling, and thus the triumphs and defeats of the group become your triumphs and defeats.

As to why someone would become a patriot. Personally, I would say love.

This is the same answer that immediately came to my mind. A patriot loves his country, as one loves their family. They largely didn't choose their family, but they choose to love, and act in love for their family. To be a patriot is to feel pride, disappointment, to put in the work, to acknowledge what is great and what is left to be desired - and with all the flaws that are present in any country to choose to act in love and the best interests of their country regardless. But that doesn't mean to be blind to realities, ignore flaws, or allow others to abuse the country.
With that said the US IS a great country, despite the flaws, imo.

It was the Right populist equivalent of Occupy Wall Street and it was the direct predecessor to Trumps 2016 populist uprising.

There was an element of both of these things. The libertarian base are largely populists and isolationists who are tax/debt averse and concerned with their rights. The libertarian establishment (think Prager) are corporatists and internationalists who are regulation averse and concerned with their money. I love the former and I hate the latter (though regulation/regulatory capture is probably one of the most complex issues in politics and there is no black and white line to be fair)
