Steven Universe Artist Quits Twitter Over Fan Harassment

They don't advertise the show they're showing (that's what killed GL:TAS and Young Justice, since they weren't making any money off it, they decided to kill it).

What really killed GLTAS was the live action movie and the fact none of the merchandise for that sold. Mattel did try to show them action figures for the cartoon, but stores like Walmart, TRU, Target, etc were -understandably- reluctant to support another Green Lantern toy line when they were struggling to move movie shit even out of clearance bins.

Steven Universe at least has a demographic with some degree of disposable income, plus it's not necessarily a bad thing to not have toys when money can be made elsewhere (i.e. T shirts).

Fair enough. The Movie merchandise was the very definition of a shelf warmer. It was a damn shame, too. I liked the GLTAS. It was... alright for being a retelling of the War of Light from the comics. I would have liked to see them do Blackest Night (but that'll probably get a movie version).

I had to google some things so this made sense.

Steven Universe fan Wiki powiedział(a):
Shipping (short for "relationshipping") is the belief that two characters are in a relationship, or may have romantic feelings that could potentially lead to a relationship. Most couple names are a combination of the character names. (ex. Stevonnie is Steven and Connie).
For example, a person who would love to see Steven and Connie together would be a Stevonnie shipper, and so, they would support or ship Steven and Connie.

That is the most autistic thing i've ever read. These people are idiots.

Shipping as a term's been around since the X-Files fandom. As for the portmanteau names, it also started about then. It is common in fandoms and SU is hardly the first nor will it be the last fandom that does so.

However, a few fandoms do weird idiosyncratic names for ships. This also makes it hard for non-fandom and newcomers to know what's going on until they learn the terminology.

Fucking gold.

This simple picture is literally one of the greatest ways to both troll and trigger Steven Universe Fans:

Too bad the site is down, but there was this thing called Steven Universe perfect. Steven was buff, Pearls had big tits, Amethyst is thin (and talks about the advantages of losing weight) and Garnet is white.

Here's the only pic I could find of it.

Yeah, SU isn't being dumb on that front.

Hell, Slash got it's name from a Star Trek Fanzine back in the damn seventies (because it was Kirk/Spock... yep, that's what slash is named after).

Honestly, I wouldn't mind their shipping if they actually did anything with it other then Modern College Campus Life AU.

I know I asked them before, but seriously. They take a series that has giant robots in space against space monsters, look at that and say: Man, those characters are neat!

Then proceed to write pages and pages and pages of fanfiction placing them in boring, everyday situations.

It's like they want to strike it with 50 Shades of Grey (which was a Twilight fanfic before it became a damn BDSM novel).

It's even weirder when you compare it to other more "grounded" fandoms, that their content is more based on slice-of-life and based on reality (e.g. Osomatsu-san, despite their odd AU skits every now and then). They have the fandoms where the most well known AUs deal with the paranormal or magical or mafia or time period drama.

Meanwhile, superheroes, Lord of the Rings, Star Trek, Dr. Who, media that's filled with out-of-reality amazing things...Nothing but "fluff" and "gay husbands" and stupid Starbucks/College AUs.

It's like we can't win. They make the mundane fantastical and the fantastic mundane.

It's like they have no imagination. NONE. It's like they don't want to go tip toeing in these large universes because oh no, what if the show does it better!

And they want slice of life, so what do they do? Make them butt fucking space pirates! Because that makes sense.

But what about the actual space pirates? Let's make them butt fucking baristas, instead!

It makes my teeth itch!

No, there'll still be plenty to go around, it'll just be in other fandoms. SU is some small degree of containment.

Whatever, though. I'm sure everyone here knows to not go through tumblr tags of things you actually enjoy.

Dunno what this whole thing is about, SU's not ending anytime soon.

Cartoon Network just started pumping out merchandise and its selling to degenerates super fast

I'd rather take a fantasy AU over a lame coffee shop anyway. Why should I read about kids fooling around in a coffee shop when I can go to one and see that directly?

RIP tolerable part of the fandom

Actually, they have licensed a few toy lines that are expected to hit later this year or early next year. I can't imagine the show would end before they have a chance to see how much they can make off the toys.

In fairness, Mass Effect fan fiction at the very least didn't quite succumb to this type of fan fic rot, albeit in the early days of the fandom. At most, the only asinine things I ever saw were Neverending Story-esque bootleg shit pieces where the writer self-inserts themselves in the game (with Shepard being a secondary and entirely separate character). I have no clue what the scene is like now, but at least some people were capable of pushing the boundaries within the setting of the game's world.

Steven Universe is sort of like MLP and Sonic in that I don't think they really do prodigious amounts of fan fic; they just create donut steel OCs that completely miss the point of the overall design aesthetics of the show.

That's exactly why I've never understood the appeal of those godforsaken High School AUs. I'm like... why?

It's something I really hate when coming up with a setting and characters (not just something that permeates from the fans, either- I've seen this in professional works too).

It's literally basic writing 101- Make sure the characters fit with the setting. Sure, you can delve into their personal lives a bit. But to be entirely that and not what the setting's supposed to be about? That's stupid. I wouldn't be surprised if they took their ideas from shows like SU and MLP and somehow screwed that up (like what most Tumblr fangirls/guys tend to do).

Well I'll play the devil's advocate now and say that some fandoms in their original sources are a little more flexible to have AU settings and the like (think DC/Marvel and their parallel universe crap or Osomatsu that they do Mad Max parodies, gender-bend AU episodes, and the like), so I think that if the canon kinda supports it, then I suppose there's nothing really wrong with the fandom getting a little creative at least in these specific cases

But I do kinda agree with Luigi and Jewels that some fanfics take the concept of AUs a little too far- like they take an original story with a very clear setting in the past (with no support from canon of AUs) and then suddenly it's all "OOH MODERN AU where the characters form a band and the girls gossip lol". It comes to a point where the setting feels too different and the characters don't even resemble their original selves, like you're reading another completely different thing.

(Coffee shops/High school/mundane modern life are still boring as hell tho).
