The whole business was basically about playing pretend that severely retarded people can do profitable work. In reality, it's all taxpayer funded, and most of the work was done either directly by the support staff, or under constant supervision, by people who had masters degrees in social work. And every time it was mentioned in the newspapers it was made out as if it actually was a profitable business for the disabled, further contributing to the incredibly rosy and unrealistic idea people have about the capabilities of people with Down's syndrome.
A KFC I used to work at basically had the same thing, we had an intellectually impaired worker come in once every 2 weeks, she was a sweet lady, but my god she made my work hard. Her job was basically put warm drinks in the fridge and clean the store if you find dirty spots, the store got tax write offs, she got extra money that was tax free, and didn't affect how much money she got from disability.
She'd been doing this for 2 years before I even worked there, I would constantly have to supervise her... This is all while taking orders, counting stock, paying orders, cleaning the store and filling the main fridge and drive thru fridge.
You'd think "she's been doing this for two years, her tasks are simple and she must know how to do them" Nope, she'd constantly put the drinks on the floor of the fridge, and in the freezer or even chicken fridge. She'd go "clean" the freezer fridge with water, add no de-icing agent to the water, and one time a worker went in and slipped, because it had all frozen solid and by pure luck, nothing bad had come from it.
She was told "just clean the staff toilet" about 10 minutes later the toilet was flooding, she used this massive cleaning wipes and flushed them down the toilet, instead of just putting them in the bin right next to the toilet. The store had to close as we had no running water, everyone was paid, but the toilet was ruined and piping had burst and needed to be replaced. (This was the one day I didn't mind her fucking up)
This is just some of the shit I remember her doing, keep in mind her shift was literally 3 hours, and every shift she'd be on, i'd be thinking "What is she gonna fuck up today" and store management didn't want her around either, the franchise must have been getting some serious tax breaks, that plumbing job cost like 4k with the piping and emergency call out fee.
