I think Frank Zappa had the right idea

You need a formal education in days like these, but most learning you accomplish isn't in the campus environment

Just don't homeschool your kids, they always end up autistic as fuck
Anecdotally, this depends on the rational behind the homeschooling and other socialization the kids get. Some of my best friends from undergrad were homeschooled, and they were smart and cool as hell. Though, in both cases, they were homeschooled because their local school system sucked and their parents were very well educated. And, they also both had lots of other outlets to learn to be social (church, baseball teams, etc).

Now, if you get someone from the backwoods who was homeschooled by their poorly educated / radically religious parents, then you have a problem

Having spent the first 6 years of my school life in Australia and another 6 in the USA, I have a unique perspective of being able to compare the two first-hand.
Since no one will give a shit about Aussie primary school, I shall focus on my years in American middle and high school.
Perhaps it is because my experience with American schools was in Florida, but my experience has taught that the educators are generally apathetic to their jobs and to the education of their pupils. In addition the actual material was dated, incomplete, and inadequately discussed or engaged. And to top it off, frequently classes were over-crowded; 30 or more students. And to agree with what others have touched upon, it is clearly and blatantly a cash-grab, at the expense of the education of the children along with being filled with pro-America propaganda. Having not gone to university, I can offer no comment.

It has scared me away from formal education, and any future children I may have will most certainly be home educated. I believe I can do a far superior job than any teacher I ever had. It says something that I learnt more about World War II by watching documentaries on the telly than I did in over 4 years of history classes.
