I really like how the "educator" OP also forgot that countries that aren't the United States exist and many books that are considered classics come from those other countries. It's almost like they have an extremely narrow understanding of culture and history or something.

Do these people not understand what a classic is? Maybe we'll regard contemporary works as classics in 30 or so years. There's a reason you don't hear hear people call books written this millennium as classics.

I am all for adding more contemporary books to a school curriculum, a lot of the classics can be hard to follow and it can turn kids off of reading. I still think reading the classics is very important to learning about the evolution of literature and cultures. Half the time the books are classics because they actively pushed back against the racist/sexist/homophobic ideas of their time. If anyone reading To Kill A Mockingbird comes out assuming Harper Lee is a racist because she used the word nigger and the black man was mistreated missed the point.

Oh, yeah, the "white savior" Attica Finch who never really cared for the black man but was this close to becoming a pariah by his peers for daring to act as a black man's defense attorney. Which was his job. I get that nuance is difficult to grasp for the illiterate, but holy shit.

Racists act the way they do because of superiority, even against their "own kind" who don't follow the narrative. So the "white savior" trope they like to harp on about makes it even more hysterical they view it as a negative because to most normal people, someone who's a "savior" is someone who's above the influence and is someone to look up to for inspiration. The "savior" in these stories also tend to die/get imprisoned by the hands of other whiteys for viewing blacks as human. Becoming a pariah is actually the good end since they at least get to continue living life as normal minus having friends.

I would expect the majority of English-language websites to be Americacentric. That's just the combination of language + US being the largest English speaking country. It is interesting to note that a lot of the replies critical of him have more likes than ones that agree with him. You'll see a dozen or more likes on comments calling him out but only maybe 3 or 4 on a comment thanking him. Some have more, some have less, but overall, this is not well received. In fact most of the people who are praising him are being questioned (as you can see above).




If someone is acting unprofessional on social media, I can't say I blame someone they work for not wanting to be associated with that (considering the number of people who will call your boss if you use mean words online), but if the tables had been turned and she'd been speaking out in favor of #disruptthetexts I doubt he'd have reacted this way.
