Xbox Game Studios Stupidity Hate Thread Game Pass Edition

As they've also released FO4, FO76, and Starfield all as major games that weren't side projects, with ES6 only being announced in 2018.
Elder Scrolls Online as well. I've never met a single person who plays it, but it does exist and appears to still be receiving DLC and other content updates as recently as 2025.
Are there even any good Vita exclusive games?
There were, but they've all since been ported to other platforms (also 99% of them were visual novel games).

It sucks because --aside from the dogshit rear touchpad and Sony's bullshit with proprietary memory cards-- the Vita was a fantastic device.

It's them being possessive cunts.

There's a rumor that as part of the acquisition by Microsoft, Bethesda retained control of their IPs insofar as deciding how and what they're used for. It's partially why thr new Fallout project is a "co-production" with Bethesda "consulting" while Obsidian takes lead.

There's a story about how after NV released, Bethesda executives marched the development team into a meeting and forced them to watch a power point presentation about how they (Obsidian) don't understand the Fallout IP. That ended any working relationship they had at the time, even though the plan was for Obsidian to basically act as a support studio for Bethesda, developing b-tier titles for TES and Fallout in between the mainline entries. The relationship between the two studios is acrimonious at best, which makes it super funny to me that Microsoft basically took away Bethsoft's toy and gave it to Obsidian.
If Bethesda would actually make some decent games they could have kept playing their petty game like this, but not releasing shit and Shartfield being so atrocious has twisted the wrist of Papa MS into reacting.

Obsidian itself has also proven incapable of making interesting IP's by themself, Avowed is dogshit, Outer Worlds is dogshit and Grounded is a medicore success at best.

Whereas Bethesda has the IP's but needs to be whipped to become productive and crank out shit, Obsidian needs to be tard wrangled to crank out decent shit.

Both studios, in their own way, have been allowed to do their own thing for too long while bleeding money and nothing to show for in over 10 years.

All I hope now is that they fired the worst cancerous growths and normal developers can freely work and speak again without having to grovel at the altar of DEI before working on a game.

lol I figured it was the "bribing the press to give the game just a single percentage point average review score deficit such that Bethesda didn't have to pay Obsidian a promised performance bonus, i.e. fucking them out of a lot of money, that killed that relationship.

Glad to see it's Microsoft's idea to force Bethesda to play nice w/Obsidian this time, though I'm sure they'll fuck it up on purpose somehow out of spite anyway. I'd love to see an unflattering parody of Todd Howard get snuck into the end product somehow, though. That'd be a delight.

Obsidian is not the studio they used to be but just the fact they released games firmly plants them as one of the best studios that Microsoft actually acquired.
Where is Obsidian? There's no way they've made any money with the last two duds.
Grounded I+II were successful, and XBL partially made up for poor OW2/Avowed sales.
I actually enjoyed OW2, but I can see how the setting didn't appeal to many.
how they had to cut stuff because they just didn't have the time and resources.
IKR, the Protectorate looked so close to being joinable, but uh no, enjoy picking between Momcorp and Mathmagicians.

I wish Obsidian would have the balls to do that. Even if it’s just a few terminal entries in a deserted bunker about a pre war politician named Rodd Broward. He promised 16 times the radiation protection for his shelter project but inside the bunker is nothing but skeletons, feral ghouls and signs of broken promises.

The source of "they made us sit through a PowerPoint of what went wrong" is Chris Avellone, who is notoriously ass blasted and has been riding on one success for nearly two decades. He's also very vague about what this presentation supposedly included - and given the catastrophic technical state NV launched in, it isn't hard to imagine what was.

Obsidian constantly getting to shift blame on everyone and everything other than themselves wore out as an excuse years ago.

I think there will be a funny moment where Asha will come in 1 year during the game's development and will ask to play whatever they have developed so far. The moment she loads into the game, she is greeted with 50 bugs immediately and a hard crash on the Series X/Helix system. Her character goes through the floor and the obsidian devs have to manually type in console commands to get to the quest line. I wonder what she'll do at that moment. Phil apparently thought Redfall was fine when he played it. Will Asha say the same? If she was smart, she could have brought in the id tech devs to help out the game's bugginess but she cut them loose.

Naaah, she'll delegate that shit. There will be like a jeet death squad going from one studio to another. Nobody will even know their names, but they are feared and there's always something ominous in the air before they arrive.

No amount of asskissing or fakery will be of any help. The studios will plant flags of India and rainbows in strategic places, have all their trannies typing on their keyboards extra loud as if they're actually busy and even the janitors will be mopping in their better "Xbox is bestboX" uniforms like it's the last fucking day on earth. But no. You cannot cheat fate.

So uh... funny thing about id Software... they got fucking gutted (most of the people laid off were unionized too) and may have been turned into a support studio. incedentally it's belived by the jurnos reporting it that most of the success Doom The Dark Ages had was from Game Pass, so thank the niggercattle for letting id be killed.

Has the games industry suffered title inflation like others have? It seems like half of these guys were seniors and leads, when realistically it should maybe be a quarter, at most.

And what the fuck use for a 'monetization designer' did id have? I wish I got paid a 100k a year to sit on my ass and say every half-decade to say 'Yeah, let's just make this $60 and maybe make a DLC or two for $20 each.'

It's kinda hilarious watching a bunch of people cry in defense of modern game developers getting fired.
Well, there are people out there that openly defend Sony for foregoing physical media for their next console.

Since MS owns Activision, I'm baffled how they just shadow dropped two new ports of Black Ops 1 and 2 only on PlayStation platforms. I'm sure they have to know how compromised the Xbox ports are, even with backwards compatibility.

Even better, the DLC isn't even included. They retroactively created a season pass for Black Ops 1 to sell. Black Ops 1 did not originally have a season pass.

John Carmack has posted his thoughts on the id layoffs.

Seems like a very Carmack take and I think he's doing his autistic best to be sympathetic to those layed off. He has always been pragmatic and forward looking, not someone that clings to nostalgia. But I'm sure it will outrage Redditors and they'll interpret his words in the most bad faith way possible.

Hell, I read it as attempting to be quite generous especially regarding his comment about the assumption of stupidity of executives. The fact that the developer apparently didn't know wtf they were doing as their next project after doom TDA went out the door is still utter insanity.

90 million to make Doom 2016(1090 roles). 150 million to make Doom Eternal(1300 roles) God knows how much to have made Doom TDA

The simple reality is, cut the bloat, make games that aren't shit, and don't get to a point where you literally have nothing in the pipeline. 1537 professional roles on D:TDA. 20 studios involved in that mediocre release, and then nothing to move onto? That is purely executive stupidity.

I'd say 'don't put it on Game Pass day one' would have been a pretty good strategy to increase revenue. Especially for a game like TDA which has very little replay value unless you're a speedrunner (in which case you'd play on PC).

It's impossible to say for sure, but even for the shittiest flops I can't imagine there's a single game that wouldn't have enjoyed much higher sales if it hadn't been instantly available on Game Pass. Phil's big gamble fucked all these studios.

Xbox certainly need to review what's released on game pass day one, as they've done with COD. But there's games such as Silksong, Forza Horizon 6, Clair Obscur and Oblivion Remastered have sold well despite being on Gamepass. I think day one game pass is being used as a bit of scapegoat for poor sales when I think a lot of games would not have sold well if they weren't on it.

I think TDA was simply destined to not sell well, especially relative to its presumably larger budget than Eternal. Eternal was released when COVID lockdowns were starting with a lot of bored people at home getting back into gaming. The shift towards the fantasy setting with TDA was also likely offputting towards many fans.

Sold well on Xbox, or overall? Because I know Silksong broke Steam because demand was so high but I can't imagine people were rushing out to buy Xboxes so they could own a digital copy on their Series X.

Personally I bought Silksong on Steam and a physical copy of Clair Obscur for PS5; it never even occurred to me to use Game Pass,

I agree a lot of these games would have flopped either way, but they would have flopped less (or simply not existed) if you couldn't play them for "free" on Game Pass.

The fact ms didnt even tried to save something from id tech tells me things were worse than just games not selling well
I sincerely doubt anybody outside id is even qualified to work with (much less understand) id tech. It's depressing to know now there's only two major general-purpose engines left (Unity and Unreal). id tech has always been state-of-the-art. Their decision to mandate ray tracing in id tech 8 was something a lot of people found baffling. It absolutely didn't need it. Doom 2016 ran silky-smooth on potatoes. Even "low quality" looked good. Losing that tech to history and scattering knowledge of its inner workings to the four winds by laying off its developers is a big technological loss. It being Microsoft-owned means we naturally can't expect them to open-source it like older engines were.

Meanwhile literal jank like fucking "Creation Engine" still keeps hobbling along and they're still grinding out games with that piece of shit.
