I just realized that Xbox literally announced Ninja Theory's new game 1 week ago at their show. :story:

That's quite the rugpull. I guess it's just dead now?

Xbox is closing down Ninja Theory, the studio behind the Hellblade series, a source tells The Verge. Staffers were told on a call on Monday about the closure, but they are hoping the studio will find a buyer. The closure comes as “several” Xbox studios at Microsoft, including Compulsion Games and Double Fine, are in “active negotiations” about spinning off, Bloomberg reports.

The closure and negotiations follow Xbox CEO Asha Sharma and chief content officer Matt Booty warning last week of a “reset” at Xbox, laying out several challenges facing Xbox’s business — including that it had “over extended” with its studio system and the hardware component crisis is significantly driving up prices. Kotaku reported earlier on Monday that Microsoft was planning to shut down Compulsion, though it noted in an update that studio leadership was in “negotiations” with Microsoft.

Sharma has made many major decisions since taking over at Xbox in February, including locking down Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution as Xbox console exclusives in an announcement at its Xbox Games Showcase just over a week ago. During that event, Microsoft also revealed a new Hellblade game, Senua, and its future with this change is unclear.

Xbox didn’t immediately reply to a request for comment.
 
We all knew this day would come when Microsoft started buying all these studios 6-7 years ago, this shit was obviously not going to end well. I can only blame them for selling.

Double fine is the only one that I actually care, but they also deserve it. They take forever to shit out a halfbaked indie game that lasts 5 hours and has no fucking depth. Psychonauts 2 was the only recent game they made that had any meat in it, but it was still worse than the first one and filled with woke shit.

Apparently they had a contractual agreement that they could buy themselves out and go indie again if Xbox ever tried to shut them down like this (like Toys 4 Bob did). No idea if that'll actually happen though.

All of this is the result of Xbox leadership having zero vision or planning outside of throwing shit tons of money around trying to brute force themselves to success. It's a fucking mess.
 
crazy to have a studio announce a new game at your showcase only to shut them down days later. even tango didnt get done that dirty

No idea how a studio could be profitable while independent - South of Midnight was absolute dogshit that took ~5+ years to make and I can't imagine it sold well enough to sustain a studio for another 5 years.

So far so good from Xbox, glad to see the band aid being painfully ripped off and the collapse starting to happen.

Who the Hell is going to bother buying any of these has-beens?

They were already creatively bankrupt and largely devoid of talent when MicroSoft bought them, and things have only gotten worse since then.

Their one hope was East Asian companies buying them up, but both Korean and Chinese publishers know they can just make the games themselves, and companies like Square Enix have long since shed off their Western developers.

Nah, don't just blame the publisher. Most of the issues lay squarely with the developers seemingly being unable to make a marketable product despite all the resources, time and money at their disposal.

If you can't shit out a viable product after nearly a decade of development, that's on you. And barring id, that has been pretty much all MS-owned developers.

All these closures, rumoured and confirmed, bring joy to my heart.

I don't even care if the jeeta replaces everyone with jeets, MS was shitting out trash anyway, it's not like the poo goblins can do worse.

Naturally, nobody involved, be it Microsoft or the developers, will learn anything from this. They'll all still double down on their woke politics, encouraging laziness and incompetence, discriminatory hiring practices, hostility towards demographics that actually buy games et al.

The only mystery here is how the fuck Ninja Theory kept the lights on for this long, despite only ever delivering trash.
 
I wonder if they finally figured out that modern audience shit doesn't sell and that their business practice of using the profit margins of other games plus Gamepass wasn't enough to cover the losses of their first party flops. It only took losing the console war for 2 whole generations and billions of dollars in losses to figure that one out. Suddenly Xbox's finances were in dire straits and they had to wake up and smell the coffee with Microsoft breathing down their neck.

Is it really Arkane's fault that they were forced to make Redfall, a game they didn't even want to make? Or were they suffering from the usual studio rot before that happened?
