I don't know if every state waived the requirement due to COVID closing nearly every non-essential job at some point in time, but many states require those collecting unemployment to submit proof they're looking for work. I think Michigan normally requires documentation showing at least two attempts to apply for a job each week, but I'm not sure. It was moot this Spring because the requirement was waived (and I don't think it's been reinstated).
TL;DR - Some people would rather go without unemployment and live like NEETs in desperate need of cash all because they hate job hunting that much.
I wonder just how much of COVID has been transmitted through bad hygiene. Empirically, it seems like the people who do what's normally taken for granted -- bathing regularly, frequently washing their faces and hands, and washing their hands after each trip to the rest room -- aren't having as many COVID cases unless they fall into a more vulnerable category.
From what I heard during a Zoom meeting tonight, Michigan might not get enough vaccine doses in the first go-around to inoculate all the health care workers (or whomever is priority #1 on the list) that want/need it. It won't surprise me if this is also true on a national or global level.
I know of a restaurant that opted to stay shut down during the Spring lockdown and waited until sit-down service reopened in the summer. This time around, it appeared they stayed closed a week or two at the most and then opted to do take-out service simply because they need the money and can't take another hit like they did in the Spring. I hope they make whatever they need to break even for many reasons.

This may be true to some extent, but both parties are losing their moderation and becoming more polarized with time. The average normie who believes themselves moderate or independent truly can't relate to either party because their stances are so polar opposite with no desire to find middle ground.
It also doesn't help that the media portrays Republicans as selfish nutters who care only about themselves while portraying the Dems as infallible and incapable of any sort of wrong. At the same time, anyone expressing conservative beliefs is called out and cancelled. That may play a role in many such people choosing to keep a low profile.

I wouldn't call most of them authoritarians so much as just running around like headless chickens. They are goddamn incapable of dealing with a disaster or comprehending that there are alternatives to dealing with this than the garbage they are pushing through. They are beyond out of touch with their constituents, probably involved in corruption involving the federal disaster funds and what gets counted as a case or a death, and in every way, shape, and form inept. The alternative to that is calling them outright evil and they're all doing this as part of the Reset we've been told is coming and is a good thing, but I think your average politician is merely stupid and ignorant rather than evil. The hardest thing these politicians have ever had to do in their lives is smile at people they hate (their constituents) while making a speech, and now we expect them to make tough decisions based on numerous sciences that will kill some people at the cost of saving others, along with improving the mental and physical health of pretty much everyone. Not surprising they just listen to DA EXPUHTS at the Health Department, who also have little relation to actual science given their hardest job is normally counting cockroaches and funny looking stains at local restaurants.
There is practically zero leadership in the United States or most Western countries right now, and there is a colossal gap between what the science actually says and decisions allegedly being based on science. Since people like to compare fighting COVID-19 to a war, this is a war being led by people that make your average WWII Italian general look like Alexander the Great. Lockdowns are the equivalent of sending wave after wave of soldiers to die in human wave attacks when it's been proven it isn't doing shit and is doing far more damage to you than it is to the enemy.
Nice to see Russia-style internal passports, shit literally create by the Tsar and his goons that the Soviets loved even more. When this comes to the US, I hope it will be used to keep Californians and people from other shitholes out of the rest of the country. I know some sign language and have known deaf people. There's a dance like, rhythmic quality to it and making emotive facial expressions while signing is a thing. Them taking our faces away is demoralizing and feels deliberate.
We've been having some nicer days and though I'm not psychotic about the coof, unhinged people have become more unhinged. People who want friends but don't know how but are outside all day trying anyways.
I started seeing some new guy around my area, I think he's about 20. Maskless, dressed nice (so probably not homeless or section 8) but clearly lacking social cues and darting around and approaching people too fast. I've lived in too many ghetto warzone neighborhoods and people coming at me too fast makes me ready to fight. It makes the coof-fearful also act more irrational and makes them more of a pain in the ass.
I'm using my bike more and they're forcing more and more places to go drive thru only. I just want a coffee. I'm not wasting gas to go someplace I'd rather walk or bike to.
My gym is practically useless with restrictions so I do stuff outside. We can't use showers or lockers. I gotta stink all the way home.
This is beyond tiresome.

Ok, it is deliberate. I can barely watch news or consume anything modern because it's all Coofporn and mask fetishism. I think about six weeks ago nearly everyone around me has lost their shit and can no longer interact with people in public properly anymore. I saw a near-fight in Cvs over nothing on Sunday. Everyone just standing around internally whimpering at this point. It's a good thing I'm used to stress.

I've stopped with most media. Though I do listen to RTE radio one, an irish station. Mostly because they play nice music, and a wide variety of it, the presenters have beautiful voices and the news isnt too histrionic.
Also older films. Even stuff from the 80s, and 90s. I watched Contact with Jodie foster in the other day and that's good. But old movies like the ealing comedies, stuff like that is a good bet. At this point I think its needed to step away in order to maintain a semblance of sanity.
I also went to a local Sikh temple for food. The Sikhs have communal kitchens in their temples and serve food three times a day for any and all who need it. The last few months our local one has been in the news inviting anyone feeling a need for community to go along, no religious pressure or anything.
The food was incredible and the ladies and gents there are just bloody amazing. My point is though, people are there doing good. It might be hard to find sometimes but it is there, I promise

For some reason the only people wearing face shields that I've seen were also wearing masks. It's as if the image of the mask is so ingrained that the face shield can only be supplementary.

Those are the best people to trigger, I my experience. I love walking my maskless self near them, if I do a really good job of upsetting them they get their visors fogged up.
I'm not saying I go and cough on them or get to close to them. But the mere physical presence of a LITERAL GRANDMA KILLER is enough to scare shit out of them.

I haven't seen anyone with a visor also wearing a mask IRL. It's usually older people and always sticking out at an angle so it doesn't even cover their mouth.
One of my housemates got one of these ridiculous fucking things but they haven't worn it, possibly out of shame after I said it was stupid.
