we don't see the world as it is; we see the world as it is useful to see it.
Have you ever looked everywhere for your keys, scanned the kitchen counter three times, and then someone else walks up and points right at them? They were sitting in plain sight the entire time.
Your eyes physically saw the keys, but because you were rushed or stressed, your brain assumed, "I already checked there, they aren't there." Because your brain didn't expect them to be there, it literally edited them out of your vision. You were blind to something right in front of your face.
You are sitting on the couch and you feel your phone vibrate in your pocket. You reach in to check the text message... but your pocket is empty. Your phone is sitting across the room.
Your brain has become so used to the feeling of your phone buzzing that it constantly expects it. If your pants rub against your leg in a certain way, your brain instantly jumps to conclusions and assumes, "That's a text message!" It creates the physical feeling of a vibration out of thin air just because it expected it.
Your reality isn't a perfect video recording. It is a rough draft made up of your brain's daily assumptions, habits, and moods. Most of the time, the brain guesses right, but when it guesses wrong, you realize just how fragile and inconsistent your view of the world really is
