Why is the sky blue?

rayleigh scattering

basically light can resonate with small particles in the air (if the particle is the right size relative to the wavelength of the light source) and turn the particle into a dipole radiator which sends that wavelength of light in all directions. since that happens everywhere it gives a diffuse blue tint. it happens with red light too, but not nearly as much, because blue light has the optimal guntlength to make it happen.

It's an industry standard. Most games these days use the stock blue with white clouds skybox. I think you can change it in the options > landscape > color palette.
