Pride. That's all.

If Jesus was indeed their foretold Messiah, they got it fucking wrong. That isn't acceptable.
If Jesus was not their messiah, but was in fact the Son of God, sent by his Father to redeem all mankind, they lose their special status as God's chosen.
If Jesus was neither of the above, but merely a human being, they lost control of the biggest money-spinner the planet has ever seen.

Jesus proclaimed himself "King of the Jews" & son of God with a direct connection to the Divine that didn't require participation in Jewish rites & rituals. Jews don't believe in a human messiah or holy trinity--they believe in only God. And they didn't like that he was flipping tables about their attempts to take money in exchange for prayers/blessings in the Temples.

Today's Christians are basically the Jews of the Bible: stuck on ancient texts & rituals while missing the bigger picture, money-obsessed & would kill Jesus if he came back tomorrow.
