I was in China once, went to the public restroom and saw and old dude squatting on the wc taking a dump with the door unclosed. He even looked me in the eye as if it was the most natural thing to do.

During the Korean War, the difference between the two was shockingly evident to American soldiers. Any American who was unlucky enough to surrender to the North Koreans was simply shot in the head after being robbed of valuables, so it was considered a great blessing to be captured by the comparatively humane Communist Chinese, who understood the intelligence and propaganda value in taking live prisoners and made every effort to keep their captives alive, at least until they reached the prison camps.
