He wouldn't be able to since Sonichu wasn't even entirely his own original idea since it's a mash up of Sonic and Pikachu. If anything Chris should be the one who gets sued for stealing already existing characters.
What if Chris switched bodies with Clyde Clash?

Clyde would leak EVERYTHING Chris has while Chris himself would either shit himself and do nothing or be too busy laughing at how much of a "freak" he is.

You can't copyright a character, you can only copyright a specific expression of it.
For example, Nintendo has copyright on the Pokemon games. It doesn't have copyright on the Pikachu character. (Now, if they hired someone to draw Pikachu, then they'd have copyright on that drawing.)
(And, of course, trademarks are a separate issue.)
As far as this applies to Sonichu, Chris has copyright on the Sonichu comics because he was literally the person who put pen to paper and drew the original comics. He is the author of Sonichu, thus he holds the copyright. Because Chris holds the copyright, you need his permission to publish Sonichu.
Now, some parts of the comics could be derivative works because they incorporate stuff that Chris didn't make. But all that means is that Chris can't publish Sonichu himself without permission of the people he ripped off. But it works down the ladder too. You can't publish Sonichu without Chris' permission.
Chris can legally shut you down if you publish Sonichu, because it's his work. He has a valid copyright on it. But that doesn't mean he has the right to publish Sonichu either.
