It's mean, but also somewhat plausible. Barb sleeps a lot, the Chandlers keep strange hours, and Chris probably doesn't see much point in waking Barb up, since she'll be cranky and demanding. When Barb does die, Chris will probably not realize it for a few hours.
 
What if instead of banning him from any form of travel, Chris parents permitted him to do so provided that he had to have a friend come along with him whenever he does?

Oh it'd be pretty much identical to the movie Road Trip; Chris and his bros would travel the country looking for cooze, drinking, smoking, bro-ing it up real proper.

(for one, the "lesbian female soul" thing would be hard to explain with the then lack of belief in a soul...)
