This is impossible to answer because 40k is a setting, not a series.

There's so many novels and all are different. Themes, style, factions, genre.

You gotta give us some of what you like or are interested in so we can direct you to the most relevant novels.

However, generally, if you know nothing.

Eisenhorn - small scale (relatively) cloak and dagger political thriller and perpetually in print because it's that good and iconic. An Inquisitor investigates a conspiracy. Good introduction since its fairly self contained and the trilogy requires no background info.

Horus Heresy Books 1-5 - a prequel and introduction to the Greek tragedy character study that is the prequel setting. Epic space opera in scope.

Plague Wars (Dark Imperium) - introduction to 'current' plot and the return of Guilliman. Covers major factions and characters from things like Space Marines (and primaris), Custodes, Guard, Sisters of Battle, humans in general (a cool psychopathic as shit priest), and Chaos Demons/Death Guard. Introduces things to new readers as you go, fairly epic in scope, and features a mix of character moments and pure unhinged bolter porn set pieces.


Infinite and Divine - necron dark comedy/tragedy. Iconic novel. Doesn't require much background as its set over such a vast time period.

Helsreach - God's grumpiest warrior sulks about as Black Templars murder orks in a hopeless siege because fuck it they're taking xenos to hell with them. Another iconic novel, the audiobook fucks.


Otherwise go 'X faction seems neat' and we can direct you to the good stuff. Warhammer crime, grimdark psychological horror, dumbass action movies. The novels have it all.

Like Diabeticsyde said it's a big setting and it's kind of hard to recommend stuff to people.

The Horus Heresy's first five books are a good starting point if you want to look into the early days of the setting (30k instead of 40k.)

Some other books that he didn't recommend.

Gaunt's Ghosts for Guard is a great read, and is a Guard-focused novel centered around Commissar Ibram Gaunt and his regiment of Tanith First and Only Guardsmen.

Fifteen Hours is another great guard novel that really sets the tone for the setting.

For Astartes, I'd say the Ultramarine Omnibus is always a good place to start, even if it is a bit dated. Helsreach, as was recommended above, Rynns World, Dante etc.

In general though Warhammer is pretty easy to get into novel wise, just find a faction you enjoy and find a book you like for them.

Implication is a coward's way out. If you're going to have something, have it. Tip-toeing around the truth or what you're going for is for mystery novels. This is a setting where people get turned into drugs to snort and babies get turned into flying robots.

(1) yeah, a dadmonculaba is totally something chaos would do. But if you follow what chaos would do to its logical conclusions every depiction of chaos would be a cross between a Serbian Film and Precious and Trainspotting, and few ppl actually want that.
What most people mostly want is Saturday morning cartoon or pirate villainy with some horror tossed in. Chaos is at its most fun when it's camp and not mean-spirited. Metal bawkses!

Obligatory mention for the first Ciaphas Cain omnibus for a more Blackadder pisstake on the setting. (It's still serious, mind, but the POV character does not wallow in the grimderp and is fairly self aware.).
 
Only the deaf or the weak do not heed the incessant drums of war. Dehumanize yourself and face to slaughter. The Blood God calls for blood. His fury is made manifest and he will not be denied.
Also kill and behead psyker trannies. Disgusting creatures.

I do love Cain but it's always my recommendation as a palate cleanser in between all the darker novels.

I think the humor of 'actually, I'd like to live today' works better once you've seen a couple death before dishonor last stands of the space marines.


Also the audiobook narrator nails the ww1 British colonel voice and cadence for Cain, 11/10.

Yeah, Cain after reading 15 hours hits a lot better than Cain before reading 15 hours
 
I would unironically recommend The Book of Martyrs for some good Sister stuff. Three different stories each focusing on a different order. Valorous Hearts, Martyr'd Lady and The Bloody Rose(who have a Hospitaller with them). Get a little bit of everything out of the stories.
 
I would suggest some Ork books like Brutal but Kunning, Kunnin but Brutal, Warboss (where ya literally have three ork Warbosses and a Grot in a race to see who can lead the WAAAGH after their Warboss gets krumped by accident), the Red Gobbo collection is very nice, Ghazkhull Thraka Warlord of Warlords (seriously, this one is just glorious Ork shit)

Amberly has a different voice actor (smartly) and her exasperated disdain for having to result to shit like travelogues because Cain won't just elaborate ever on shit he doesn't care about is so fantastic in audio format.

Cain's VA does her dialogue whenever she's part of the actual story being told which is funny, but it's rarer than Amberly's VA cutting in to editorialize or throw shade on one of Cain's dalliances that isn't her.

It only changes for the narrator which means you get some stuff like Sulla's dialogue being read by Cain and Amberly's much hated Sulla Memoir being read by Amberly.

Amberly cutting in mid sentence with her sarcasm works so fantastic. They really did work on the audiobooks for Cain.

The Warhammer Crime: Wraithbone Phoenix audiobook has the propaganda interludes include music and a voice filter like its coming over a loudspeaker and those are also more fun in audiobook form.
 
June community update for SM2. Not much to say about this one.

-Scarab Occult Sorcerer, the new Chaos Terminus that wasn't ready for patch 13, will be added in 14 for every Chaos op.
-6 new heroics. First 3 they showed were a combi power fist(melta), a stalker bolt rifle, and what looks to be a burning power sword.
-Raptors cosmetic pack is gonna have both pauldrons, a chest, helmet and two cloaks(one covers the whole power pack). Still think this is as retarded as the Carcharodons pack.

Year 3 shit
-Absolver Bolt Pistol and a one handed Thunder Hammer(so a power maul/Crozius) are gonna be the new weapons coming. Which narrows down the new class to either apothecary or chaplain, but they also tried to tease a 3rd option but these are the only two that use the Absolver. They were gonna do a greatsword but did this instead. Teased the GS could still happen.
-More champion packs. Space Wolf Wolf Guard with round shield. Deathwatch Champion(Chappy. Bet.) Salamanders Heavy with Multi Melta skin. More to come.
-Exorcists getting a cosmetic pack. Yet another "why" choice, but I'll just use this as more fuel for chaplain evidence.

Biggest thing is that they're doing mod support for consoles.
Edit: Oh yeah and Chaos Siege.
