Bullets do weird things, so I'll admit the low amount of damage to Trump isn't extremely compelling. The sound, however, is extremely similar to a .22LR and it would be shocking for it to be anything else. It would've had to have been a grazing shot for either cartridge, but even with a grazing shot I would've expected .223 to do a lot more damage. People shit on .223, but it is a proper rifle round, and is many many times more powerful than a .22LR.

You can use both .223 or 556 with the AR-15. The .223 is typically for hunting or target shooting due to its lower velocity and civ standards production, while 5.56 is for more tactical usage due to its higher velocity and milspec production.

Frankly, at that distance either or could have been used but 556 would have been my ENTIRELY HYPOTHETICAL choice in this situation over the .223.
