If anything I'd say America has been through several imperial phases. The Manifest Destiny era which ended with the Civil War and America stretching from sea to shining sea. The Industrial Age where America began to reach across the Pacific and ended up fighting the World Wars. The post WW2 hegemon that we all recognize as 'American Empire' was really just the latest evolution.
