The solution is to just improve the security of the border itself and then provide a one time amnesty for the people who are here right now. This entire plan relies upon our border policies being properly enforced to avoid having illegal immigrants just come back in again and then having us repeat the cycle which is unrealistic given the DNC's history and efforts to sabotage all attempts at enforcing our border laws while also refusing to revise them to fit in with their open borders narrative. The cause of this is that they want undocumented people in the country so they can serve as underpaid foreign laborers. The GOP does want this too but they've already committed to deportations so backing down now would be political suicide.

Is it still as popular as it used to be? There was a surge in it's recent popularity with Hal Lindsey's Late, Great Planet Earth in the '70s, but the peak was probably during the GW Bush years when Left Behind was so popular, right? I don't hear about it as much as I used to, but maybe it's still popular in churches?
