Underrated PS1 games

Here's one that I'm not surprised you guys haven't heard about: Motortoons. My friends owned it and it was one of the games I can remember being jealous of not owning. Ultimately I forgot the title and was surprised how uncommon it was because the majority of game related lists failed to include it. Regardless if you've never heard of it or have, play it! It's a blast!

To me the most criminaly underrated game is Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver. If you can get past the somewhat boring puzzles (there arent that many but i remember them being very annoying) and the lackluster gameplay, the series offers some of the best story, voice acting, and character development I have ever experienced in any game. The world is drenched in this heavy bleak atmosphere, it really gives you the feeling tjat the world is on the brink of colapse. I think the whole Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver trilogy is avaible on Steam, but I honestly only have the 3rd game on steam and it works just fine. If you are looking for a not ao dificuilt game with excellent writing and characters give it a shot. I remember playing a pirated version and it had no voice acting whatsoever (probably as an anti pirating measure) and my 11 year old self understood nothing. But after buying the whole trilogy some years ago I can truly appreciate it for the gem that it is.

Aquanaut's Holiday

It's a diving game that was made for the PS1 where you swim around and interact with sea life, it had a few japan only sequels and had an installment on the PS3.

Thousand Arms

It's an RPG with dating sim elements, never really became a large series. The combat is turn based.

Koudelka

The precursor to Shadow Hearts this is a quasi gothic RPG(gothic as in aesthetic not in Piranha-Bytes style Gothic gameplay). Gameplay for this is turn based.

Riven

It's clearly the Sequel to Myst(it even says so in the title), but this game had 5, yes FIVE WHOLE DISCS for it's PS1 port. It's one of the larger games on the system.

Battletstations.

You fight 1 vs 1 as a boat fighting other boats. Put out by Electronic Arts surprisingly

Tales of Destiny 1 and 2(Tales of Eternia)

First two tales games that came stateside and they are both expensive on the secondary market. Many future tales games had many references to these two titles.

Torneko: the Last Hope
A dragon quest spinoff where you play as the humble merchant. It's a Roguelike where each dungeon you enter has everything randomly generated. Your levels reset when you leave a dungeon and start a new one. There's a hunger meter and combat is turn based. it can be quite challenging

Koudelka was interesting for not having any text boxes. The entire game had spoken dialogue which was defintely unique (though the puzzles sucked since they solved themselves once you had the clues).

Destruction Derby Raw as also very fun and when I bought it for my PS1 it came in a bundle with this game

One of the many great racing games despite only driving Porsche. The maps were fun with routes opening and closing during the race.

I forgot to mention Ace Combat series. AC3: Electrosphere specifically. A great game that haven't got the right amount of appreciation back in a day.

Important note: there are two variations of the game. The worldwide release and Japanese one. I recommend to play both, but second might require translation pack. Project aces did one iirc but I'm not sure...
