From the sounds of things, it was a one-two punch of being banned from the End Games (cutting off his main avenue of interaction with them) and the idea guys and the TTS getting their hooks into him and convincing him the dimensional merge was a thing (thus convincing him he didn't need other friends). It probably also didn't help that he was kind of a dick to some of them when they tried to offer him friendly life advice.

Chris will never develop beyond the emotional capacity of a zygote because any stimulus that exceeds the Hurtful Truth Level is disregarded without a thought, even if it comes from a source of legitimate authority.
