It is, technically. Its traditionally been used as a linguistics term when talking about objects referred to as masculine, feminine, or neuter in grammatically gendered languages. Around two centuries ago we started using the term “gender” as a substitute for the word “sex” (my guess is it was a prudish Victorian idea, but correct me if I’m wrong), and its only been these past few decades where faggots in academia proposed that gender was a social construct on “how one felt”, which they corrupted from the radfems who were trying to get the point across that basing identity off of gender was pointless and stupid.
