Transhumanism and you - Aka let's blow the shackles of limitations.

It'll start with the ability to grow (more and more varieties of) working, healthy, replacement organs; we've already grown bladders, for instance. Meaning that, absent cognitive decline, we could be insulated from most organ-related diseases. Then, we'll move on to being able to plug more and more artificial components into our neural network (a bionic arm that can do this already exists). The main barrier in the medium term is keeping the brain running.

In the long term, it's almost inevitable that we'll be able to replace every part of a person except for the brain. Rich people, and later not-so-rich people will basically be able to design a cyborg body that will be theirs for eternity all being well. And frankly it's for the best; immortality means infinite time to explore space, and likely the ability to colonise uninhabitable worlds too.

And frankly, even if people find this to be disturbing, I guarantee you that if you ask someone "would you rather not have to ever die?" the vast majority will say "Of course."

immortality means infinite time
If you meant that literally, then there's a problem: machines can and do break down. Not to mention the universe will eventually die. The Sun has "only" 5 billion years.

And in any case, disease (read: malware) or accidents can still destroy machine life. Not to mention that murder or war could still be a thing, even among cyborgs/robots.

Plus Roko's Basilisk will fuck your shit up.

I actually wish we could leave well enough alone. There's always progress to be made, and I'm not saying to stop or go stagnant, but there's also a level of "too far" that I hope we never reach.

What that actually entails remains to be seen, but I don't foresee anything good coming from crossing that threshold.

I like the optimistic view often seen in 20th century scifi: there's progress and exploration -- and even sophisticated virtual reality entertainment like holograms -- but the essential "mode of life" isn't too different from the 20th century of reality.

Meanwhile the rapidly -- and recklessly -- advancing technology of the early 21st century seems to be hurtling us towards something like the Borg out of Star Trek.

This is a nice thread. This video is my entire reply to those that wouldn't augment themselves out of fear.

To be more serious I think that if such implants and organs are biologically possible, then it is inevitable that some people get them. I'm not so sure about the public running around with it however.

I always said that our technology has advanced so fast in the recent years that if you went back 200 years ago and shown the people the technology we have now it wouldn't even be comprehensible to most of them.

If you went back even further we would be seen as gods on par with demonic/angelic entities. Showing them a lighter in your pocket would make them freak out. Not to mention the fact we are communicating right now over hundreds of miles in seconds.

All i'm saying is that technology is amazing, and while I do understand the many concerns with it considering the modern climate I do not fear it.

If we have the technology to enhance our minds with computers, and to replace 40-80% of our body with artificial parts that are better than what we were born with that means we probably have antivirus software on par with those advances.

The real question is if we could become immortal would you even want to?

Transhumanism has the potential to be absolutely amazing, but given the current trajectories in society it will end up being horrifically bad.

I expect humanity to be converted into a hivemind where the individual is 100% disposable. Basically an existence of being a glorified ant drone, mindlessly slaving away for the colony and your fatass Queen/tech giant

Assuming it's even possible to do "mind uploading" into computer, or augmenting brain function with implant, hacking or malware would be a very disturbing possibility.

Bad religion is already like that, especially bad religion like cults that are actually intentionally designed to fuck up your mind.

Now imagine cults that make Scientology and Jonestown look like preschool level shit and involve actually literally hacking your mind, either with physical brain implants or your uploaded self.

You are either naïve or malicious. Technology and "transhumanism" will do absolutely nothing except enslave humanity for a short period before destroying us. You seriously need to sit down and think about this. The logical conclusion is obvious if you just bother to think about it without considering the bells and whistles of technology.

Antivirus software isn't perfect though. Even if it were and like I said, hackers could still get in with "social engineering" or other techniques. Governments could have "back door" access as well.

Sounds like something out of a scifi. They could make a victim a completely unquestioning mindless drone doing literally anything the cult tells them to. Even in thought.

People who develop new technology quite often see dollar signs instead of potential consequences.

Worse than even that, because you wouldn't be mindless. You would have a mind, it would just have been changed at the most fundamental level to be acting out the purposes of the organization of its own "free will."

Dugin actually called the trans thing before it blew up. He says humans enthralled by liberalism seek never-ending emancipation from all physical and psychological constraints to the point that they want to be liberated from the human species.

The desire to be liberated from reality is entirely understandable. Authoritarian attempts to force people to pretend that your fantasies are reality are neither forgivable nor tolerable.
