My knowledge of train related subjects stems purely from Transport Tycoon. I think trains are pretty neat.

Did you actually build detailed, functional track layouts or did you do what I did in OpenTTD and build tracks (possibly parallel) that just went from point A to point B and back again?

The one thing I did get out of that game was building vacuum trains from an extension I installed, which is how I knew Hyperloop was a pants-on-head retarded idea as soon as I found out about it.

I never figured out how to build proper rail networks and remember avoiding using trains unless the economic advantage was critical (except for the aforementioned money wasted on 3rd party vacuum trains)

I think that's pretty much how real rail networks got built as well.

Now it makes sense why there are large swathes of abandoned track laying around sometimes. If the old coal mine shuts down there's no need to spend the effort to take out the tracks. Hell, sometimes I don't even sell the train and just leave it abandoned in the sheds.
