What I've also noticed with people who I've talked to that are into Touhou don't really know other horizontal/vertical shooters. Some people don't seem to know what Ikaruga is.
I've played other shmups like Ikaruga, Mushihime-Sama, and the Orange Juice family of games, as well as retro shmups like Zero-Wing (ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US!), Thunder Force, and Advanced Busterhawk Gleylancer. However, Touhou is the longer-running and deeper rabbit hole than any other shmup out there, which is why I tend to fixate on it so much more.

But favourite theme overall is probably a gouyoku version, that game's full of banger remixes. The kutaka one immediately jumps to mind.
I think my favorite theme from Gouyoku Ibun has to be the remix of Magician's Melancholy, which if memory serves is only ever used for a single cutscene where Reimu and Marisa discuss the current goings-on. Everything from the flutes and piano, to the choir near the end of the loop helps give it that ethereal feeling of a fantasy world in turmoil. Absolutely beautiful.

Though special shout-outs to Utsuho's theme from this game. I fucking love those bass slaps at the start.

I need y'all to destroy my autistic fixation on something real quick. Since I've been on this site. I've been in a mood to make a mod of Touhou Puppet Dance Performance, but instead of catching touhou girlies, its lolcows. And even though I dont mind re-using the maps and location in the game, i would replace the puppets and the girls themselves with lolcows.

I do think its cringe, but its an excuse to draw more... Realistically the chance of this going anywhere are low. But i cant manage myself to start doing something more productive in my free time. I know these types of idea are not well receive on the site (i looked at threads about making a Pokemon Clover for kiwi farms and the interest is not really there) I think if I share this idea here it would deter me from keep going and do something better.
I still want to draw the quartering in the style of PDP tho...

Anyways that's all I wanted to say. Im gonna go add more skills and abilities to my spreadsheets now.
why not just kitbash real pics
If we don't get Puppychan as a Touhou I'll be upset.

100% doable. I am revamping the entire type chart and Furry was a potential type, I ended up jamming it with a Vtuber type but it might be a bad idea. Unless the typing is about their " fake persona" and I could build it fromt the illusion type in the game.

What are you guys's favorite final boss themes? I'm honestly pretty biased toward Keiki's, it has a really catchy rhythm and some of the best remixes I've heard for a modern 2hu. I also appreciate the little bit of Eastern Wonderland that's there to tie everything together.
https://youtube.com/watch?v=Y0VYKbTSxu0Edit: I think someone already asked this, but I don't really care I just like sharing good music :)
This rock remix of Ariya's theme.

I should really try out some other bullet hells from time to time apart from Touhou and Len'en to get a culture, any recommendations? (Mind you that I am not that good at them, I play on Normal)

Shmupfags are insufferable. I'll likely never play anything other than Touhou simply because of how annoying the people who talk about other bullet hells are. Didn't have a good experience with the couple I tried anyhow.

I'm going to take a page from @Scarthew from this thread and recommend the Orange Juice games, as much like Touhou, they're (mostly) light-hearted shmups with a (mostly) female cast.
  • The QP Shooting series will probably feel the most familiar to you as a Touhou player: you're a dot trying to avoid a maze of other glowing dots, in this case, a dog-girl who's tormented by a cat-girl stealing her desserts. The sequel, QP Shooting Dangerous!, is available on Steam, but if you want the first game, you'll have to resort to... other methods.
  • Flying Red Barrel focuses more about trying to build up combos with rockets.
  • Suguri and Sora are more about dodging via a dash mechanic, much like the Touhou fighting games. Bullets are fast and hitboxes are large, and dashing through bullets too often builds up a "Heat meter" which increases how much damage you take, so it has a very high skill ceiling. Sora in particular is much darker than most of Orange Juice's catalog, as it's a war-torn sci-fi dystopia, and many characters are heavily implied to have undergone inhumane experimentation and brainwashing, some of whom have physical deformities.

In any genre or subgenre dominated by a single big fish, there tends to form a contrarian anti-fandom that likes whatever they currently think will take down the big fish. There’s usually valid reasons to dislike the big fish, mind, but also valid reasons to like the big fish and dislike the small fish. In practice, this often leads to them championing a swarm of 4-6/10 games you’ve never heard of, either all at once or whichever one is gonna release next, and generally making fools of themselves for not realising that the jealousy is very obviously seeping from every pore. I’ve even seen it in this thread once or twice.

See also: Tabletop strategy games that don’t come from James Workshop and Mon games in particular. I swear, the only people with lower standards than hardcore Pokemon fans are hardcore Pokemon antis.

I also reccomend acceleration of suguri 2 and maiden and spell 1 on 1 bullet/hell fighting game hybrids.

There's also Rabbit and Steel a coop "schmup" designed around mmo style raid bosses.

Twinkle Star Sprites which is a puzzle attack style game like super puzzle fighter or puyo tetris where killing chains of enemies on your side sends junk enemies over.

Rabi Ribi & Tevi both by crespirit are both metroidvania platformers specifically designed around bullet spam. Tevi just got a new dlc yesterday. If you like Touhou Luna Nights these are full length versions basically.

These are all non-traditional reccomendations for the normal reccomendations I'd give are the obvious 3 R-type (especially delta), ikaruga and gradius. Also personal favorite of mine is UN Squadron (SNES version, NOT arcade)

Not the bullet hell games but 100% OJ is the most bullshit game ever developed.
