Thought's on SSRI's?

They're a roulette wheel. Might get one that works for you, might get one that does nothing, might get one that gives you tardive dyskinesia. They work for some people, some of the time. They won't solve any underlying issues or life problems you have that may be responsible for you feeling like shit all the time, but they might give you just enough drive to fix them (or enough drive to blow your brains out, it's a crapshoot.) I wouldn't take them just for insomnia.

Agree, it's mostly placebo, and that's a medically recognized fact. And any actual benefits always seem to be relatively short lived.

The side effects are real though. Fun fact: lexapro is sometimes scripted off label to treat premature ejaculation.

We're specifically talking SSRIs though, and TD is normally a symptom associated with antipsychotics.

If they try to give someone abilify that's a possibility though, because yeah sure antipsychotics for depression, why not. Just take pills and give us money.

They make the manufacturers and the suppliers money.
They do not appear to work the way they thought they did for decades.

This Archived NYT article has a good number of interesting links in it, but I can't say the article itself is worth reading.
I'd consider every other option including not sleeping before putting that kind of mind altering drug into my body.

They make me drowsy if I take them early in the day. Other than that they seem to mellow me out just enough to not be a catatonic wreck. Dick works fine. (mild power level, I have mental issues, I wouldn't take them just to sleep)

They can work well for people who really need them, but they are absolutely over-prescribed.
If you are fit, healthy, eat a good diet, and have a decent living situation, but are still fucked up, then they could be worth a try.
  • Birth defects (might need drugs forever)
  • Brain injuries (might need drugs forever)
  • Illness-induced mental illness
  • Mental illnesses that can't be addressed by lifestyle changes
On that last one, I don't mean "Can't be cured in X time frame" I mean "Can't be cured." full stop.
IF you get on SSRIs, the goal should usually be to get back off them eventually (even if it's years later). Use them to get stable, then get yourself and your life to a point where you can taper down; and you do need to taper down. Doing the "standard taper" for SSRIs will cause awful withdrawal symptoms that people think are a recurrence of their symptoms.

Really dependent on the person what works for one person might zonk out another. I believe the base science around it is attempting to control the ebb and flow of certain brain chemicals to manage mood.

Interesting thing is the original way was to flood your brain with more chemical, however it was found the body would adapt by then draining it faster to maintain its internal consistency so modern antidepressants actually manage the ebb or drain of that certain brain chemical to artificially increase it to 'normal' levels

Strange that they are using an ssri to help you sleep but SSRIS are probably a broad category relating to medications managing brain chemistry.

But fuck me I started taking sleeping pills the other day and I felt sleepy for about 2 days straight.
