I just eliminate letters that wouldn't fit in the word, then I attempt to fill it in with the remaining letters.

I just eliminate letters that wouldn't fit in the word, then I attempt to fill it in with the remaining letters.

Maybe I take a hybrid approach. Mostly it's finding the obvious (how many fove letter words begin with Y and end with T, for example? Not many) and then assuming there's going to be some cross board swapping or "hidden gems."

"Hidden gems" is a term I just made up to describe a better swap option that's not immediately apparent because another letter that's the same is already in the row(column and provides a Red Herring of sorts. (I think @Speedrunner mentioned this before in the thread.)

One example from today might be today's puzzle with O and A swapped to help create SLOPE and ERASE.

I do the finger thing quite a bit with NYT Connections (thread here).

If there were one improvement they could make, it would be a "two tap" system to definitively select each tile before swapping. At least, as an option.
