I don't know why but I despise the word queer as a term for being gay, so I exclusively use the word to mean 'strange'. I have no idea why I have such a massive aversion to it. I completely agree he uses it to mean strange.

Queer to mean gay is considered derogatory by a lot of people, to be fair. So your aversion isn't really unfounded.

I had no idea that this was a thing. The only people I hear use the word are people who identify as gay or genderqueer or something along those lines.

From what I can tell it's mostly seen as derogatory in the UK, not so much in the US. But I know people from the US who dislike the term. It's a weird one because there's also a lot of people who are okay with it too. I don't know if it started as an insult but I think it's a case of non-LGBT people using the term liberally as an insult so some people end up with a bad taste in their mouths when they hear it.

It probably stems from essentially having one's sexuality being labelled using a word that means "odd/strange". I can see why someone could take offense to it, but I've personally never known someone to do so.

At one point it was exclusively derogatory, but a whole "take back the word" thing happened and now it's okay, within the northeastern US at least, in the right context. My college even had a Queer Student Union and a LBGQLMNOP (or something to that effect). Can't speak for the rest of the US, though.

Depends on the context. Being homosexual myself, it doesn't really bother me that much, but then again, neither does faggot. They used to years ago. GK using it, as strange as he is, probably refers to weird.
