Actually, Jewish law recognizes 3 degrees of Judaism. If your father is Jewish but your mother isn't, you're a second-degree Jew through your paternal grandmother, but you're not a lesser Jew for that, since anyone within those 3 degrees is fully a Jew for legal purposes.
