Pearl went to the Farmer's Market today, where they also had a vintage vendor event. She has decor tips to share with you all. There was a time when more people decorated with birbs, and she finds it ridiculous that fashion has moved away from that golden age of superior art and decor. She also came across a locally distilled gin that she thinks everyone should buy.

Oooooh! I would totally hang that macaw painting on my wall. Pearl has great taste in decor.

Birds are so cute and as a cat owner, I'm jealous that they have such long life spans. Like, I get sad that my cat only lived 20 years, having my little buddy for 50 yrs would be so cool.

I'll strongly advocate against having a bird, because they are a very, very serious commitment - but I'll also say that if you're willing to give your life over to the claws and scissor beak of an asshole tyrannosaurus with wings and zero volume control, don't let cats stop you. Felines are typically smart enough to know better than to fuck with something that can remove fleshy bits and snap bones (only a past roommate's cat was dumb enough to fuck with my Grey, and my feathered demon snapped that cat's tail in two. Like crushed the bone. Cat never bothered another bird for the remainder of his life). My kitties never fuck with my bird because they have brains. (Doggos are another matter - never mix companion birds with mutts, because canines will 'play' with the bird until the bird is dead. Too many horror stories from fellow bird owners there.)

Also, do be aware that plenty of birds only live 20-30 years. These are mostly your smaller birds - budgies, ringnecks, conures, mini macaws, etc. Midsized twerps like greys and amazons and goffin cockatoos hit the 40-50 range. And then there's the big 'uns, the macaws and full-sized umbrella cockatoos, which can hit 80+.

Part of the reason I strongly advocate against having a bird, especially the larger breeds, is because I have seen FAR too many distraught, distressed birds in shelters and continually booted from home to home because their original owner passes and either they didn't will it to anyone or the person who received the bird didn't want it. These poor babies live 20-40 years with their person, grow deep bonds with their person, then suffer their person's death. Then they get shuffled around from home to home because they're 'problematic' and they 'scream' and they never form that deep bond with their new person, because they're scared and distressed and want their original person back.

Let's pour one out for the old birds out there, and hope that they get forever homes with people that understand that messes and screaming can be gently coaxed out of a bird, and they can be encouraged to love again. Because seeing a scarlet macaw on her 5th home in 5 years and having her owner ask me if I want to take in another bird (and me regretfully stating that with my grey and his burning jealousy of other feathered companions, I simply can't because it's /his/ home and /his/ flock and I wouldn't want to upset my companion for 20+ years) is very upsetting.

Sorry 'bout the sperging. Just had feelings today. Because poor scarlet macaw girl.
 
I had a phase as a kid where I thought talking parrots were the funniest thing.
