Personally, it doesn't bother me. I saw a high-res version of the original cover and the picture they originally used of Sombrero Mario has a blurry look to it, as if it was a in-game screenshot they took and slapped it on the cover. Snorkling Mario has a higher quality look to him that matches the rest of the photos, unlike Sombrero Mario. People don't realize that the cover will subject to change overtime.

It could be a coincidence that people assume it's the SJWs fault for getting rid of it. I made a gif so you can see the comparison of the small minor adjustments they made besides the photo. I apologize for the quality since they were JPG files.

For once I actually agree with the Neogaf consensus on this. Nintendo doesn't really capitulate to the SJW hate mob (no homos in Tomodachi Life, no non-normie gender option in Pokemon, everything about Alison Rapp, no black Samus or female Link) and apparently, the underwater Mario world debuted alongside the new box art. The original was probably just a work in progress until new reveals were ready.

It is funny seeing the ones claiming there was no controversy.
