The 7th-11th seasons are basically Kung Fu Sherlock Holmes vs Aliens, and they're all pretty solid stories, nothing egregious like some of the black and white episodes could end up.

There are 2 reasons I advocate for a reboot:

I think it’s too soon for any kind of reboot at the moment. The series needs to lay fallow for a good long while. When it does come back they shouldn’t focus on a full length series, they need to start with some specials or a limited run series, maybe even an anthology series.

I didn’t participate in the Capaldi love-fest but I’m glad we at least got one middle-aged Doctor before the show turned into, like, Hollyoaks.

Hollyoaks? I’m sorry, but nu-Who isn’t that good, we’re at Byker Grove levels at best, maybe Bernard’s Watch at a stretch.

The first one is pretty great. The second one if I remember rightly is mostly just another "Bashir has a specially challenged girlfriend" episode, like Melora and The Wire. Bashir, being an enhanced superman, naturally has a penchant for the disabled and confused due to his raging narcissism.

The relationship in that second episode always struck me as morally dubious, definitely not something a doctor should be engaging in.

The only other one I can think of is that woman from Battlestar Galactica: Razor. She was also on Farscape as one of those weird nurses Scorpius had.

She was also in the second season of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

I sometime imagine modern Trek writers sitting around the writing room with a spinning wheel with the name of major powers and they just throw a dart at it to decide which major homeworld to blow up.

Don't forget when he seemingly died in one episode, and when Sato went to pay her respects to him, she described an off-screen prank from the past that could have actually been shown to flesh out his character.

I saw this interview with Peter Davison where he’s talking about hearing Colin Baker on the radio right before he took over. Baker is talking like he’s about to reinvent television. And Davison's listening to this interview just muttering under his breath, "Yeah, you don't know what you're up against."

The Doctor should look weird. Tom Baker is like nine feet tall and his voice sounds like God's judgment. He’s also funny. But not Marvel quippy funny. Like he’s amused by something no human understands. The other Who actors tried to do the “ancient alien wisdom” thing and it just sounds like a Green Lantern fan explaining lore.

I've seen a handful of Doctor Who episodes, and one of them was the 50th anniversary special with Sir John Hurt. It's hilarious to see him meet two of his future incarnations, assume they're human companions, and wonder if he's going through a midlife crisis once he learns they're who he's going to turn into.

The augments are hilarious because they’re totally unbearable. Imagine wanting to raise the next Khan Noonien Singh and instead he's just genetically engineered to annoy you.

It's ingenious, creating agents designed to annoy enemies into giving up.

He never really lands for me, but I get it, lots of fans grew up on Pertwee.



I've always had soft spot for "The Sun Makers", which sort of predicted the serials that came later where the Doctor 'visits' the present: "Vengeance on Varos", "Paradise Towers", "Happiness Patrol", "Survival", "Aliens of London", "The Long Game" and "Rise of the Cybermen"… it’s basically Britain and the "aliens" are the establishment.



Now TV producers are vetted for loyalty. Science fiction lost its balls as a result. Really depressing that Doctor Who has become the absurd "Bear With Me" trash TV it satirized.

What is so difficult about uploading a teaser to YouTube the day or the day after an episode airs? Also, pretty much every other show has a podcast to go over each episode with the writers and a couple of actors now. This is as Modern Television as a bunch of zoomers crying about their feelings instead of starships making with the pew-pew.

I'm generally more open to/forgiving of the slop when I can listen to the people who made it explain what they were going for. Wouldn't help much here, but "meet each other halfway" and all that. I don't give a shit about Glitter Barf or Betazoid Fuck Buddy, but I'd appreciate it if the writers at least tried to explain why I should, because the show doesn't. "Wow, this guy turned blue once!" big whoop.

The best thing I can say about most of the cadets is that they are not Caleb. They are boring, Caleb just sucks. "Wahhhhhh, I don't want to be here." Okay fine, go listen to Space Linkin Park somewhere else. Your mom is more interesting, and she's barely in this (and they are way underusing Tatiana Maslany unless there's a twist and she's actually the mastermind behind Paul Giamatti's pirate empire so she can show off her "I can play a dozen characters in the same show, and a good two or three simultaneously" talent.)

Kelvin timeline isn't really a clean reboot, and Kurtzman Trek is supposed to be the "Prime timeline" with retconned visuals (and sexuality). I would have significantly less hate in my heart for the new shows if they were an honest BSG style reboot, rather than explicitly vandalizing the existing universe.

Still, your broader point stands. Without writers and producers who actually want to create quality Trek, it'll be more garbage. The right people just aren't there, and I have zero trust in modern Hollywood to produce anything but gender-fluid schlock.

At the very least, they tried to divorce it from the canon timeline instead of undoing everything previously established like most reboots.

Granted, it still led to the destruction of Canon!Romulus, but I digress.

To be fair, everything was working against him. The script editor did not like him, and had wildly different ideas on what to do in his debut appearance from the producer, which lead to the infamous scene where he chokes out his companion in a fit of madness and then never apologizes. The chemistry between him and the leading lady was bad at first because they got off on the wrong foot, and Colin Baker apparently bit her ass as a joke. (Hard to blame him, Nicola Bryant is pretty hot.)

They eventually sorted it out though.

This was also the period where pretty much all of the BBC higher ups absolutely hated Doctor Who and were looking for any excuse to cancel it, leading to episode counts getting cut, a random format change to 45 minutes instead of the original 25, and high standards for the ratings. His seasons are disasters on every level, and he only got two.

I kinda like him though. His acting is fine, and his characterization almost works. He's like an extra violent Willy Wonka.

Time has been so cruel to the show that Colin Baker is no longer in the bottom tier. Like history has vindicated him purely because worse things happened.

The difference is at least Jodie Whittaker had previously acted on television like a normal person. Colin Baker is just a shouty guy.



To be fair Sylvester McCoy also kinda sucks at acting. But McCoy at least leaned into being like a weird evil clown. And the episodes got dark and satirical so it worked. With Baker you’re just watching a man shrieking at Peri for 10 serials. You can see him occasionally try to do a little warmth, like he’ll gently 'boop' her nose, but it doesn't last.



The BBC was like “we’re bringing back the mysterious dangerous Doctor.”

And what they created instead was like if your uncle became the Doctor after five beers.



The most famous moment of his entire run is a guy falling into acid and Baker going “You’ll forgive me if I don’t join you.” Which also feels like the production crew speaking directly to the audience.



Nothing worked. The stories made no sense, the Doctor is just an asshole, and he doesn’t even get a real regeneration. They basically fired him off-camera.
