Ok so this was a prototype holodeck, which was deemed too resource and power hungry (and 'caused some shenanigans) to really be safely used at that point. Still a dumb episode.

Oh cmon, she was reasonably purty in the 9.321 femtoseconds of screentime where she was not hissing, snarling, nagging, sneering, or cajoling. Sure she was no Nurse Ogowa but....oh fuck i'm gonna have to rank the Trek Asian chicks next aren't I?

Whatever that can wait until I have my morning coffee. For now I will simply note that Keiko was an inadvertent casualty of DS9 directive 237 which states that Miles O'Brien must be made to suffer at any and all times. Since she was the closest to him, that meant it automatically fell to her to carry out this sacred duty more often than not

This was super jarring they straight up copy pasted the TNG holodeck layout. Not sure if that's meant to be a member berry of just straight up laziness or what.

Could they have at least made it more... 70s looking? Like if you're going to shit all over TOS like a jilted girlfriend you may as well make the aesthetics line up a LITTLE.

Or at least make it different from the one from TNG. Make it the size of a bedroom or need the person to walk on a giant gyro-sphere floor. Something.

Took me two seconds to come up with an appropriately 60s/70s esque proto-holodeck concept.

Giant walk-in disco ball set in a larger room which visually looks obscenely overdesigned and energy draining for what it is and thus justifies the concept being mothballed for the next century with barely any exposition needed. Think a somewhat less ominous take on the engine room from Event Horizon with the bright colors and general aesthetics of a 1968 West Berlin Discothèque

It just saddens me that the only shows that had any reverence towards TOS and didn't fuck with it's aesthetics when it was shown was pre-ENT. DS9 and TNG had no shame about it.

Not everything needs to look like JJ Trek. The 1960s look is not an inherently bad thing. Shit make things more subdued and muted like the Cage if that's the era we're supposed to be in.

ENT too with its mirror universe episode set on the ship that got shunted out of the main universe during The Tholian Web back in TOS. Didn't try to retcon its aesthetic or design to bring it away from old timey 60s sci fi, just showed it as is with all the mirror universe assholes remarking on how crazy advanced it all was compared to their Stargate lookin ship and tech without the slightest snark or winking at the camera
