Hijras actually occupy a special "3rd gender" position when it comes to the countries of the Indian Peninsula (this type of classification is mostly restricted to Hindus, which is why you almost never hear of a "Pakistani" hijra. They're nearly always Indian). Even the Gov. of India recognizes them as being neither male nor female, and from what I'm aware of, there's even shit like hijra-only bathrooms. The majority of them are assigned to lower casts, typically Dalits.
