PS1 was a success because Nintendo shit the bed by using cartridges for the N64 and pushing away third parties while Sega shit the bed by making the Saturn too much of a pain to develop for + bad launch timing in the US.
There's still some bullshit involved there. MS will advertise their games as having Xbox to PC crossplay, but they don't specify that the crossplay only applies to titles purchases on the windows store. If you own their title through Epic or Steam, they will not have crossplay function with Xbox. I found this out the hard way when a bunch of my Xbox friends bought Insurgency Sandstorm to play with me and it wouldn't work unless I purchased the title again through Microsoft.
Everybody says this while consoles inexorably get more complex and require more technical knowledge every single generation. It's not 1998 anymore and a console is no longer a standalone, one-size-fits-all, turnkey affair.
