Some time ago I got into an argument with a few people in this thread because I was praising the remake of SH2 without playing the PS2 original (I did play the original Xbox port Restless Dreams prior to the remake but never finished it) and now having actually played the PS2 version I get why they were upset. There are so many aspects of the game that were changed or tweaked and often in a way that made the game less scary or goofier then the original. I think the original blows it out of the water. It feels very different and I get why OG Silent hill fans disliked it.
The combat is the to me the most glaring difference between the two. In the original you had the choice to run from a large percentage of fights in the game. In the remake if you're indoors you have to fight the vast majority of the time. This turns it from a horror survival game into almost an action game where James is some kind of badass he is certainly not meant to be. That was the main issue that stood out to me.

Check out the real SILENT HILL 2 movie. Despite the developers claiming no inspiration it's funny how the narrative has deeply rooted themes that line up perfectly with the story of 2 (not the demake btw). It's a mindfuck. Tarkovsky's response to Kubrick's 2001. Deeply emotional, very surreal.
The very fascinating difference between SILENT HILL and Solaris is that Solaris 's "entity" or spiritual fuckery seems to be conscious and sentient. Whereas the original three Silent Hill games worked more like a fucked up funhouse mirror cause of a corrupted native American spirit of the land.

We forgive you. That's sadly how it usually goes with newcomers/remake first players to most series. I apologize for being harsh about it.
The original is something to replay and think about to the grave, the remake is something to play through once and never touch again. It was talked about, glazed for a year or less incessantly like re4 remake was and it was promptly agreed the original was better in most ways. Doesn't even have all the music or a results screen theme like the original and it's never getting the Born From A Wish subscenario (that you can play with the emulated 2.01 PS2 greatest hits version).
The remake got a lot of semi obscure fanbase details I saw from Nubzombie's camera hacked run, but nothing to show for gameplay wise so it's awkward, they hyper focused and tried to appeal to as many fans as possible but didn't think to make a proper 5 hour game remake and decided to add so much padding and filler content it becomes a slog. It's like turning a one shot movie into a series that's split up into 7 hour long parts.
I wonder how much better the Short Message remake was, given they had the true James with his jacket patches on his model. Only issue was everything was too bright like in the final Bloober product. Menu screen was more accurate too even if barebones compared to Bloober's lmao.
If you can see how they fucked up SH2, just wait for Silent Hill 1. It's gonna be the worst remake ever made, or just so mediocre you forget it's a remake of a landmark PS1 title. Go play the originals if you haven't. They're worth it. Maybe even 4 if you're brave.

They added shit they didn't need to years ago. It started with their "enhanced" version of the famous red squares.
As of the latest update it may be more subtle, but you can't disable it because the devs are dumb faggots who don't realize that the scope of their project need only be parity with the PS2 version. Best to just emulate it.
