Most kevlar vests, even previously shot ones, will stop most of what flies out of a shotgun: velocity too low, projectiles too squishy.

Also range and shot type matter a lot. Getting shot in the back with, for example, birdshot at 50 yards without a vest compared to birdshot at 5 or 10 yards is a world of difference.
