I knew cheap Chinese clothing is a problem but I didn’t realize just how many fake websites these Chinese companies create to make it seem like they’re boutiques based out of the United States actually existed. I made a huge mistake making a purchase off one of these scam websites Santorini Styles back in January after seeing an adorable swimsuit advertised on Pinterest. Never received the item and am having a hell of a time getting my refund back.

Fuck fast fashion and cheap Chinese crap!! Seriously, don’t buy clothing online unless it is 100% a well-known company you trust.

So in other words they are cutting the useless middleman- the shop?
They’re shittifying the middlemen by having their operations exist completely online so they can have more manipulative marketing whilst selling garments that are even more cheaply than what you’d find at a brick-and-mortar store.

I wouldn’t even be surprised if big clothing brands in the near future just got rid of their in-person shopping and made it all online. That would incentivize them to cut costs further and put out crap.

I buy comfy clothing from Temu, like hoodies or anything I dont really wear in public.
Not really into big brand fashion tho, dont really see the appeal to it.
I get most of my clothes from primark and most of them are hawaiian shirts.

Be wary even with big online hubs like Amazon.

It's not just clothes either - I've had a lot of bait and switch with Amazon lately. It never used to be this bad, now it's become as irrelevant as eBay.
I basically don't bother online shopping for clothes/homewares unless it's a known brand retailer and I've already been in their store/own some of their product.

I've had friends scammed/bait and switched by Temu, Wish, Sheike

the problem with amazon is that often people think they are buying from amazon, but actually they are buying from some third party merchant that is just using amazon for its marketing and sales infrastructure

I think Amazon is now the #1 retailer of women’s clothing. I only ever buy their Free People dupes and only after I read the reviews. But the clothing in so many brick-and-mortar stores is crap quality now, too; it might look okay, but is cheaply made of thin, low-quality fabric. I don’t think you have to spend a lot to look nice, but I prefer now to buy largely name-brand items from reputable brands and boutiques because Chinesium and Bangladeshium is so common.

Happened once to me, then i discovered TEMU. I now check temu and shein before i purchase anything. I was going to buy my wedding ring of a "website" wanted $200 for a tungsten ring emailed them for sizing info never got backed to me. Dropped it like a dog shit, found temu through good advertising and found the same ring for $10.

But yes fuck chinks and there scam websites. Although Romwe actually has some nicely made cute designs that i've used as staple pieces recently.

There are only two clothing vendor stereotypes that don't rip me off nowadays.
1. Slightly overpriced "American heritage" earthy pseudo-workwear brands that get autistic over what blend their blue jeans are made of
2. Sprezzatura Naturale Mamma Mia Made in Italy attire
Honorable mention to crowdfund sites Gustin, but if things have gotten so bad that I can only buy a good quality t-shirt through crowdfunding for like $80 then the economy is broken.

I got taken in by a site that advertised under the banner of Vermont Country Store's founder brothers. Got my money back, but my fault for not noting the contact info phone number was obviously not real (super facepalm).

I have since used Scamdoc.com and online reviews to help if I tread off the beaten path shopping online.

Here's Santorinistyle's score, fyi:

I also use google image search to see if more reputable sites carry the same item, as they often do.

Always ALWAYS use a credit card and get the charges reversed.

Milanoo comes to mind. A lot of people got burned buying formal wear and lolita from them. And they're still around. It's all stolen pictures. From what I remember they have poorly paid, often unskilled seamstresses who create copies of the item you think you are getting. it's a total crapshoot whether or not you will get anything of passable quality.

People are so used to fast fashion that they don't seem to care that they are getting crappy chineseum products. I'm having trouble affording clothing and I'm tempted to buy this stuff. But I know it's a waste.

Every time I go on Amazon I see these reviews that make me wonder what is going on with the companies. Sizing seems all over the place. Like there's no standard size pattern being used and it's "work faster slave! Or no water break for you". I think the reason the quality varies so much from piece to piece is that they hire desperate people who have to make a ridiculous amount of pieces every day in order to get paid. So mistakes get made. I've seen the Temu and Shein videos and I don't want to support that kind of environment for workers. But it's getting very hard not to unless you want to be naked.

Are there any good online clothing stores in the first place? Anything I have bought online that wasn’t vintage from Etsy or directly from a name brands website has been chinese garbage that ended up in the trash
I can't even go online window shopping because I can't find a cute clothing site that isn't obviously temu/shein crap

Another sometimes overlooked point of fast fashion, especially that from China, is that it often contains shit like lead. Even US clothing brands that don’t manufacture overseas use PFAS (endocrine disruptor) and AZO dyes (carcinogen). For new clothing I only buy from Afirm Group brands (restricted substances) or clothing using Oeko-Tex and GOTS standard materials but for accessories I do sometimes buy designer dupes on Aliexpress/Taobao and I test them with lead testing kits.

I feel the same way. I think part of it, for me, is grappling with delayed gratification and reconciling the difference between, for example, a $30 pair of jeans vs a $100 pair. I can wait and not shop fast fashion and save up for the more expensive pair that will last longer than three pairs of the $30 jeans, but my brain still has a hard time with the overall dollar amount lol.

I’ve since resolved to only shopping brick and mortar too (when not shopping vintage) but on the topic of Etsy, I’ve noticed that it too has become overrun with dropshippers and it’s so annoying!
