The biggest reason why I decided to revisit the June of Showa year 58 (1983 in the Gregorian calendar) is because of something that was in many of the fan messages I've received: “I want to erase my memory so that I can experience that shock for the first time all over again.”

You know what this reminds me of? That episode of Evangelion where Asuka gets mindraped by an angel, and Rei ends up javelin throwing the Lance of Longinus through it, and it ends up floating in space.
I'll give this episode a point for reminding me of that. 1/10 better than most of Sotsu.

True to the original would have been nice since there are a lot of newcomers. The perspective flip and stealth sequel was an interesting premise but in the end, this wasn't worth it.

I got issues with Outbreak because they don't seem to react to a crisis like they should. Rena is a lot less distraught over her dad being killed than when he was getting scammed. And apparently the VN version validated a theory that was suppose to be bullshit. Something about aliens, didn't actually read it. On the other hand, I heard an interesting theory that it's suppose to be a fan fiction by Takano because a TAKANO was credited as the story writer.

Takano wasn't a looper who was consistently trying to murder someone over and over again for the sake of it.
I'm not trying to argue that she was a great person, her own circumstances were absolutely dreadful in their own way, but from Takano's perspective she (tried) to commit the whole "gonna genocide this village" just once and failed.

I was thinking more how Ryukishi and his approach to the story.
His afterword to Higurashi included him talking about how Takano and Teppei getting punished isn't the ideal happy ending he would've wanted, even though Takano was going to commit a horrible atrocity, and Teppei was 100% a complete bastard without anything resembling sympathetic traits. If Ryukishi didn't even feel like scumbags like them deserve punishment, he wasn't going to want to punish Satoko either, even with her sins being so much greater.
Of course, I guess he only cares about the living. Rika and Satoko's parents, despite not being bad people, get to stay dead, even in the final world.

Again, not trying to say that perspective is the wrong way to look at things, since at the very end of it all its "happily ever after" with the whole gang alive.
My point is they put so much emphasis on the whole "This is going to come back and bite you" with the whole people remembering past fragments, hell even Eua outright mentioned that the effect on the memory was getting stronger per loop.

Yeah, those things are pretty big issues with how the loops are treated. Being able to discard old worlds may be a necessity to not become completely deranged as a looper, but it's kind of a seriously sociopathic sentiment to take.
Memory leaks are definitely one of the worst handled aspects, that's for sure. The gang only got old memories they also got in the original, and other than that, it's just a convenient plot device to rewrite Teppei and Rina's characters into something completely different from their original selves. Obviously the club won't ever gain memories from either all those times Satoko killed herself or the horrible tragedies they caused. That would actually make them relevant to the plot, and that's just unacceptable.

So why is it that he can just casually get up, no strings attached? He should be according to cannon, tied to the bed in order to prevent self-harm and him potentially harming others.

But nah.. Let's just let him wake up, pretty much completely fine, not tied down and not like muscle atrophy from being in a coma for an entire year is a thing.

Since the episode takes place in March '87, it's more like being nearly five years in a coma, so I guess they figured it'd be okay to not restrain him at that point. It's still dumb, though, because that's not something you can reliably determine from someone in a coma.

Since I can't reply to Kairi's post for some reason, I can't help but think the only reason why Rika and Satoko cross counter punched each other was because Ryukishi wanted a Melty Blood reference.

I dunno how that moral would apply when Rika was always the one with much more of a clearly unhealthy dependency on Satoko in the original. Rika getting so close to Satoko was always about keeping the emotional crutch needed for her to keep going in the loops close to her, and Satoko getting emotional support was more of a secondary benefit.
DEEN completely failed to express this side of Rika, alongside her severe identity issues, since they cut out all the relevant scenes (other than maybe Saikoroshi, but that lacked the needed buildup), so Rika just looked like a good girl supporting her long-suffering friend, instead of it being the mutually codependent relationship they were supposed to have.

It's a real shame, too, since these are really some of the most interesting parts of Rika's characters, but most of the people familiar with Higurashi never knew about it since they only watched the DEEN version.

The really stupid thing is how Passione handled it, though. You'd think they would've focused more on setting up Rika's emotional need towards Satoko more, especially since they need to make up for the DEEN adaptation that more people are familiar with. As it stands, the only hints towards this side of Rika is subtext in Satokowashi (i.e. Rika pretty much guilting Satoko into buying the book in Matsuri-2; Rika completely refusing to accept Satoko's abject refusal of St. Lucia in Matsuri-3, still insisting on having both the school and Satoko; Rika completely ignoring everything Satoko says in Matsuri-4 about how much she loves Hinamizawa and could never comprehend why anyone would want to leave it; and so forth) that you'd only be able to get if you're already intimately familiar with the original VN and inclined towards more cynical interpretations.
Spending so much rethreading old arcs (that prove to be completely irrelevant in the end) on a near one-to-one basis while refusing to actually cover the material that is key to the main plot of your new show is just the most bizarre and incompetent thing I can imagine. They really just took Ryukishi's script, which obviously wasn't very good already, and just made the worst possible decisions at every possible turn.

I forgot to mention that I watched Rei a couple weeks ago. Saikoroshi-hen had some great moments, but ultimately failed as an adaptation by all but omitting Frederica Bernkastel. Hajisarashi-hen and Hirukowashi-hen were hilarious, though, and super scription of data is a wonderful song. I'd give the original two seasons an 8/10, and Rei a 6/10.

I've also been watching Rose Matter's readthrough of the VN, as well as Japanese uploads of the sillier arcs.

His theory is there were actual demonic possessions, or a fanatic cult at work, if not both, which I think is pretty amusing, but I'm not gonna tell him if he's hot or cold lol. Gonna watch the next arc tomorrow, maybe see if I can squeeze in "Curse-Killing", but he'll have to watch the rest of it on his own after he gets back home from his visit.

Hilariously enough, he got a call from a friend of his in the car and I got to briefly talk to him over the phone, and when BF mentioned we were gonna be watching Higurashi that night, his friend said he hadn't watched the original but was a couple of episodes into Gou. In which I then raised my voice "NO, STOP, DO NOT WATCH THAT SHIT FURTHER FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS ANIME" something to that effect. Think I got through to him.

The only problems with DEEN are that it isn't the greatest 1-1 adaption in history and S1's visuals can be grotty at times (i.e. nothing). It's still a classic 2000s anime, one of the few actually good "horror" anime (even if it isn't really horror) and fun as fuck.
