That’s like saying a wolf is a dog just because it belongs to order Canis.Flying foxes are, indeed, bats.
Same order (chiropteran), different genuses. Flying foxes are genus pteropus, whereas other bats have a separate genus, such as rhinolophus (horseshoe bats).
Good luck finding a flying fox in the wild in Canada.
