Fair enough if that's what you prefer. There really isn't a lot of platforming in RT, probably due to the limitation, while there seems to be a lot more in Codename: Viper. Also goes for EAR (which is awesome btw,) it doesn't really have a whole lot of actual platforming. It doesn't really need to because using the elevators is the main movement gimmick, just like hopping the rail is in RT.Yes, all that, that's what I don't agree with. The commitment and limitations are what make Rolling Thunder what it is, and distinct from something like Contra or Megaman. The platforming is awesome.
A major iteration on Rolling Thunder came along very shortly in the form of the original Shinobi: it added midair jump controls and shooting, no "unfair" infinite respawns, and boss fights. Great game, but I still like RT a bit better.
Best update of RT is Elevator Action Returns, which has more weapons and melee attacks and all that jazz, but sticks with "bad" jumps and respawn chaos.
I probably agree with you in spirit though, since I bothered to beat RT with no savestates on NES but don't really want to go any further with C:V, at least right now. RT2 also lets you air control, but not shoot in the air, which I think is a nice balance. Being able to shoot in the air in C:V really does change the feel imo.
