In which again trying to learn a language to better yourself or make yourself more cultured is shit upon by gatekeeping, patronizing, tumblrtards "on their behalf". The lack of self awareness how treating the blind/deaf/non-english speakers like children is dehumanizing is fucking astounding, but I wouln't expect anything less.

Deaf people especially want more hearing people to know sign. A tiny fraction of people being able to speak your language is so depressing and isolating. Learning braille is can be very useful don't people realize folks go deaf or blind when they get old? Loosing your sight and hearing is like a part of getting old.

Exactly. I knew a girl who used her phone to type what she wanted to say to people who couldn't sign, but without that? You're locked in a fucking box, unable to communicate with a majority of people. One time I served a guy at walmart and at the end of the transaction he signed "thanks". Indeed. I once saw an ask post on a deaf girl's blog, and Anonymous claimed that a hearing person learning sign language was literally cultural appropriation and that it should be strictly limited to the deaf and hard-of-hearing. The deaf girl reacted appropriately, and pretty much said what you guys have said.
Why is it a bad thing to learn a language in order to be able to communicate better with the deaf, blind, ESL, what have you? Interpreters and translators might as well be a scourge for those kind of people according to Tumblr logic...
