Huh, there's a memory. The kerfuffle over this picture at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts was one of the first instances I realized the Western world had gone completely insane.

Cultural Appropriation and La Japonaise

x

Last July, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts (BMFA) put on an exhibition featuring Claude Monet’s La Japonaise (1875), a painting of Camille, Monet’s wife, dressed in a resplendent red kimono. For some of that period, the museum also invited visitors to “dress up” in a replica of the depicted kimono beside the painting, to take selfies, and share them with the museum. Protestors accused the BMFA of Orientalism and cultural appropriation, after which the museum cancelled the dress-up activity in favour of one in which visitors could interact with the garment in other ways. More details about the case are here and here.

The blog entry basically goes over what happened, but curiously leaves OUT the fact that the kimino museum patrons were invited to model was made in Japan, by Japanese crafters who were INVITING people to do what was accused as being "Orientalism." My google-fu is having trouble locating more links about this, either I suck or they've disappeared over time. But, yep, wipipo had to step up and save those silly nips, who didn't know better, from the horror of "Orientalism." With the gift to the museum they had created expressly for that purpose. My eyes crossed back then, and still do.
