My information is over a decade old, but back when I worked retail the other people working it were teenagers, drug addicted older people that would be blasted half the time they bothered to show up to work, and the rare retiree looking for literally anything to do because they didn't know how to stop working.

To move up the chain even one rung to assistant manager the requirements were "don't be retarded, show up on time, learn how to do whatever in the store needs to be done." Anyone could do it, but the people who work retail aren't exactly motivated, which is why they're still cleaning up the floor after 5 years of working at the same mega mart.

This is 100% still true. When I was in college and worked retail and became an example employee just because I showed up on time and did the bare minimum. It’s not hard to get a promotion at these places either, a lot of the managers are still in college and making a decent wage.
