Oh, now this is a thread I know could go places with sheer insanity. System roleplayers host a labyrinthine mess of dumb shit in their heads. Find the right ones on tumblr and you'll get some wild melodrama.
I think there's some overlap with the BPD tumblr crowd in the way that this stuff always comes out to being a shield in the form of "You can't make me take accountability for my actions, make me conform to societal norms/rules, care about people or do anything even remotely normal because I have a mental illness!" and other excuses. It's special snowflaking so hard you have to come up with multiple fake personalities to make sure you're sitting right there on the :autism:1 special podium.
I hear you there. It's genuinely upsetting to see a bunch of morons take life destroying mental illnesses and turn them into kooky quirky internet fun badges.

I used to also associate myself with other characters. It's a common trait of being a chuunibyou. You roleplay as different characters you like/want to be/create to help deal with life.
However, like the chuunibyou phase, it's something most people grow out of. Mostly because you are one person. The world identifies you as one person. The world is not changing to fit you, motherfucker.
You want to fantasize about being different characters? Great. There's a group of people who do that for a living. They're called writers. Go write something. Get that creative energy out. I'm not going to start calling you something just because you want to sound edgy.
There's a difference between this and split personality disorder. The people doing this will change their narrative when convenient for them. Example: "Plural" person identifies as Dave. Actual name is Sarah. Answers to Sarah because they're just pretending to be a dude called Dave.
On the other hand, split fucking personality disorders are a bit more severe. If the person identifies as Dave, their entire identity at that time is a person known as Dave. The person Sarah has fuck all to do with them.
I grew out of this rather quickly because I wrote the characters I thought up into fiction. It helped me become a more stable person. It helped me get over depression. Thank god I worked it out instead of becoming a cow on this god-forsaken board.

One of my personal lolcows, a friend of a friend, was a "multiple system" back when people used LiveJournal. She also thought (a) she was an elf, but (b) that Tolkien -- although she went by "Jessadriel Darkmountain" and "Elenbarathi," the latter being an early-draft form of the name of Tolkien's elf goddess Elbereth -- had gotten things terribly, terribly wrong, mostly to do with sex. It turned out, in her view, "elves" didn't save it for marriage after all, but were bisexual and wildly promiscuous in the way of the Elfquest comic book. She was autistic (as you will have noticed by now) and called her alters "brothers." One was apparently the spirit of an ancient warrior who had wound up sharing her body through some cosmic mistake. This one hung around an LJ community on war poetry a lot. The other one was completely nonverbal, although he could play the flute, and was the one she blamed it on every time she played in the mud and came home dripping. Somehow, "Jessadriel/Elenbarathi" managed to raise a daughter to adulthood without killing her (and the father wasn't even in the picture). She lived in the Pacific Northwest (because of course she did) and was apparently notorious for being a drama bomb in SCA circles out there.
