I was looking at an election map of the last U.S. election and you can tell that blue counties are large cities or their suburbs (or any other notorious liberal strongholds like Madison, WI or all of Vermont), but there are other weird exceptions. I believe the blue cluster along the Mississippi River from Memphis down to Louisiana is predominantly black (there's another river that creates that blue line in Alabama) but I can't figure out why northeastern Minnesota is as blue as it is. (Minneapolis-St. Paul is obvious.)

The blue blob in Idaho appears to be a reservation, not Boise.

Yankees

Rural Republicans vs Urban Democrats as opposed to Red State vs Blue State is a meme. Partially true, but faggot Yankee areas have less conservative countrysides and cities alike and their conservatives are also qualitatively gayer.

I'm actually more interested in figuring out why Juneau is so solidly blue, even more than Anchorage
Anchorage has the same demographics as San Diego or Houston 40 years ago. It's conservative whites (and a few Asians) working in the oil industries or the military. Juneau is just state government workers- it's the Springfield or Sacramento of Alaska.

There are three areas in Idaho that reliably vote blue. In the southeast, there is Teton county which is full of rich transplants. I think one billionaire owns something like 1/3rd of the entire county. In central Idaho, there is Blaine county. It is a series of resort towns, most permanent residents are rich transplants. The last one, which actually voted red this year, is Latah county in the southern part of the panhandle. Latah county is centered around Moscow, which is home of the University of Idaho. The town is a pretty dysfunctional mix of students, alumni who never moved away, university faculty and staff on the left, farmers, recent "conservative refugees" from other states who didn't want to/couldn't afford to move to Boise or CDA, and a hard right church led by a pastor who does his best to emulate Trump, that unironically wants to turn the town into a theocratic city, the christian equivalent of Dearborn. The rest of Latah county is split between farmers and loggers who vote 70-80% red, but only make up about 30% of the county's population.

Most of these are going to be counties fully of rural blacks (the South), counties with Indian reservations/large Indian population (west of the Mississippi), counties with college towns, or counties with a lot of tourism/vacation homes where rich liberals from the nearby blue city own summer homes and might be registered to vote there.

Northeastern Minnesota is actually an exception, because while there is a moderate Indian minority, I think it's ultimately a case of boomer liberals being too buck-broken to vote anything but Democrat. It used to be, and to a degree still is, a major center for mining and shipping and organized labor. It's a northern case of the "Dixiecrat" type of Democrat formerly found in the South before the Democrats finished their shift to the hard left during the early 10s. "Republican" used to be a generic insult in a lot of the South, and I imagine it was in this part of the country as well.

Fun fact, northeastern Minnesota was a long-time stronghold of the Socialist Party in the early 20th century. Lake County, MN voted 70% for them.

Unlike a lot of the other union labor dominated areas of the Rust Belt, they're pretty socially liberal, too. They voted to keep gay marriage in 2012, one of the only rural areas to do so. (blue = ban, yellow = keep)

It's still reasonably politically competitive, though. Trump got at least 40% of the vote in almost all of those same precincts. It's not even close to San Francisco or something voting 80+ percent Dem.

Most of those areas (minus Duluth) are extremely rural timberland. Quite a few people live off-grid up there. It's just a really culturally & geographically isolated area.

Sort of. Juneau is, as you point out, mostly government employees and others who depend on the state government for their livelihoods. Anchorage is more of a mixed bag. There's a bunch of state employees there, too, as well as tons of federal employees for the various agencies that dominate the federally-owned lands in the state plus all of the agencies under the BIA umbrella. Most of the liberal do-gooders who want to save the earth and natives live there as well.

Many of the white conservatives have left Anchorage proper and either moved to the 'suburbs' of Anchorage (still within city limits) or moved to the Mat-Su Borough to places like Wasilla. Once you get outside of the developed areas and deeper into the Mat-Su, you get the weird population of people who own guns, smoke weed, don't care for fags but don't give a shit about them, have a live-and-let-live attitude and want to be left the hell alone.
