I was looking at an election map of the last U.S. election and you can tell that blue counties are large cities or their suburbs (or any other notorious liberal strongholds like Madison, WI or all of Vermont), but there are other weird exceptions. I believe the blue cluster along the Mississippi River from Memphis down to Louisiana is predominantly black (there's another river that creates that blue line in Alabama) but I can't figure out why northeastern Minnesota is as blue as it is. (Minneapolis-St. Paul is obvious.)
