I've seen other posts of them suddenly being racist towards Japanese people, I have to look a bit deeper.

One of Nintendo's core design philosophies is being family friendly and the target audience being primarily families(although this has changed in the past decade)
Nintendo won't change their design ethos that has powered their success because of a butthurt LGBT tumblr post because they can't see gay relationships in a game they CHOOSE to buy and consume.
