Postal Redux has a lot more to do compared to the original. It plays about the same and while the new modes, secrets and weapons are cool, I like the original better than Redux because the older models, animations and intermission screens are creepier. Redux on Switch runs at 30FPS if you care, it's not a bad version. I remember reading about the ending change and I think the devs said school shootings aren't as shocking as they used to be so they changed it.

The only justifications I could accept are a vastly different controller (say, one that only had three face buttons or other similar faggotry) or a total rework of the internal infrastructure on a par with the PS3 in level of difference from mainstream computers.

Neither is likely.
 
I am vaguely pro not having backwards compatibility because I want an excuse to not buy into another hardware generation. If that makes any sense.

Those are some really cool re-releases at least. Jungle Beat with Wii waggle acting like the bongos is very much welcome and the Pikmin games are massively improved by the new controls.

I hope but the Japanese know no bounds when it comes to taking your money again. Sigh. I just want to play my games and keep them even when the original hardware dies, because a Switch certainly isn't as bulletproof as a old NES.
 
What’s with the recent idea that Nintendo doesn’t do backwards compatibility? Nearly every system they’ve made, at least for the first SKU, has been natively backwards compatible with the previous generation due to the hardware having a similar architecture, even with the DS where they went out of their way to add a GBA cartridge slot. The only systems that weren’t backwards compatible are the Switch itself (for many reasons, the biggest being the change from full-sized optical discs to cartridges), Gamecube (change from cartridges to discs), SNES (time constraints), Virtual Boy (does that count?), and N64 (probably the only time where they simply didn’t feel like it). Given the Switch’s massive success, the Switch 2’s (presumably) hybrid nature that will keep the same style of cartridges, and the fact that it’ll probably still be another Nvidia SoC… I’ll say it again, I’d be shocked if it weren’t backwards compatible.

Didn't digital Wii games not carry over to Wii U without a fee (and I'm not sure they even had every game available for transfer)? Or was that DS to 3DS (or both)?

At any rate they have a more spotty track record with it than Sony and (I think) Xbox. PS3 played PS1 & PS2 games, and PS5 plays PS4 games (that's basically all it has lol). Digital PS1 & PSP games carried over to Vita as well.

Wii games could still be made available through the Wii shop I believe the transfer was free to do so but you need to have a storage drive to do so. However the Wii shop was considered completely separate from the Wii U shop and so games from when we're not made available any other one. And now that the switch is out, both the Wii U shop individual shop are basically shut down so you can redownload games for those consoles that those games cannot be played on future consoles and without a further purchase

I remember both the Wii U and 3DS got transfer tools to move over Wii software and DSiWare games respectively

I guess for all of Microsoft's faults, they did support backwards compatibility with every Xbox, albeit only software emulation so only a whitelist

You're thinking of how Virtual Console games worked. You could transfer over Wii VC games and still play them in Wii mode, but you could only get the native Wii U VC versions of games you already had on the Wii at a discount instead of just getting them for free.
But other than that, digital Wii and DSi games could be transferred without a hitch.

True, but I don't know if I'd call it spotty if there's a physical limitation preventing it. Because I have nothing better to do, let's look at the ratios for major systems, not counting first generation (NES, GB, PS1, PSP) :
  • Nintendo has 10 "sequel" systems. 6/10 are BC (5/9 if you don't count GBC as a new generation). If you ignore systems that have completely different storage mediums, that's 6/8 (or 5/7).
  • Sony has 5 "sequel" systems. 4/5 are BC, though only early PS3 models can play PS2 (but props for getting Vita to play PSP games anyway despite the lack of a UMD drive).
So if - and only if - you count different storage mediums as being a legitimate reason for not having BC, they're about on par, with Sony being slightly ahead.

Pretty much what Fat Man said. Also, to add to what Fat Man said: in regards to Metroid Prime 4, the game's technical deployment was apparently very overwhelming for Retro, but the game will have many new playable features. To add on to the Microsoft part, Microsoft were also apparently caught off guard that third party support for the Switch 2 was already assured. Apparently, there was already a reputable report that the Switch 2 was going to get a massive amount of third party support, so this report only confirms it.

The only case of physical limitations would be N64 to GC, and even then if they really wanted to they could get it to play cartridges too, like with the Game Boy Player.

SNES & N64 could've done it, especially the SNES since even if we excuse the lack of backwards compatibility due to time restraints or something (not very believable, considering Famicom released in '83, SF in '90, I think the better part of a decade is long enough to squeeze that feature in; at least Genesis released a converter for SMS), the system had a revision unlike N64, so they could've included it then.

Wii U was especially egregious because I think only hacked ones can play GameCube games.

As for Switch, it may have an excuse not to play physical versions of past games (at least portably, they probably could've done something with the dock if they really wanted to) but there's no good reason not to carry over digital games. I think even at least some PS4 and/or PS5 games like Legend of Dragoon (technically an enhanced version of the game including Trophies) are honored if you had them on PSP/Vita/PS3 (I hate to praise modern Sony).

There's no good reason Super Mario Bros should be locked behind a subscription service on Switch when you bought it on Wii, then paid to carry it over to Wii U (not even counting if you had it for 3DS as well).

I'd say Nintendo is definitely spotty with this, but I do think they want to preserve as much goodwill moving forward as possible, so at a minimum I think we'll see digital backwards compatibility, but probably both.
