I think this is a poor comparison. Slap City and Rivals of Aether are relatiely popular and have niche comminities while also being Smash clones.

Playstation All-Stars had a ton of fundamental problems outside of being a poor Smash clone, it really only had the star-power that kept it from being dead on arrival.
 
If I can't play as Mikey from Nick Arcade I'm not fucking buying it.
