So, IIRC there are two reasons for this:
1) Shounen is for children. Like, much more so then the west where a lot of people of all ages enjoy it. Your adult Japanese anime otaku is watching waifu shit, seinen (older-oriented shows like Berserk and GitS), maybe mecha shit if they are older and probably One Piece although they won't admit it because it's for normies.
2) Japanese teenagers idolize a devil may care bad ass who doesn't listen to his parents and stays up past curfew whenever they want. Most westerners liked Naruto as their favorite male character. Or perhaps Lee if they were gentleman of exquisite taste. The Japs? Sasuke.

Anyway, big fan of MHA. One of the few anime that manage to make an ensemble cast work and give everyone except generic tail guy, candy man and the animal dude their time in the sun.
